Air Force Thunderbirds getting new commander

The Air Force Thunderbirds get a new commander Friday. Lieutenant Colonel Michael Chandler replaces Lieutenant Colonel Richard McSpadden Junior during a ceremony at the Thunderbirds' home at Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas.
Officials plan to upgrade the main runway at Terre Haute International Airport, which has not had major repairs for 15 years. The 9,025-foot-long runway was last patched in 1989 and is now in need of major repair to eliminate debris, mainly from crumbling pavement.

Taco leader retires

Col. William P. Robinson, the vice wing commander of the 150th Fighter Wing of the New Mexico Air National Guard at Kirtland AFB, retired in January after serving thirty-four years in the Air Force.
January 28 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Air Force Reserve Command's formal acceptance of the F-16 into its aircraft inventory. In February 1982, the Air Force announced that the Air Force Reserve would receive F-16s at Hill Air Force Base, Utah in 1984.

Cannon squadron deploys for training

Six pilots and about 155 support personnel are on their way to an undisclosed country in the Arabian Gulf for a special training exercise with local Arab air forces.
Cannon Air Force Base will have two of its squadrons leave base this month. The 524th Fighter Squadron left Saturday to deploy to Air Warrior, a training exercise at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, until Jan. 23.

177th Fighter Wing to get more modern F-16s

The F-16s used by the New Jersey Air National Guard's 177th Fighter Wing are about 20 years old and have an average of 4,500 hours in the air.
An F-16 instructor pilot from the Air Force Weapons School at Nellis AFB was presented two Distinguished Flying Crosses in a ceremony. Capt. Scott Ulmer, a member of the 16th Weapons Squadron, earned both decorations in the span of three days during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

USAF Thunderbirds Release 2004 Schedule

The USAF Thunderbirds announced the 2004 air show schedule. The team is scheduled to perform more than 65 shows in 22 states, Canada and Asia.

Congress gives $14.3 million to Luke AFB

Luke Air Force Base got a boost in its efforts to remain open after Congress granted the base a $14.3 million wish.The money, part of a Military Construction appropriation request, will be used for development rights and land acquisition around Luke.

Robins signs maintenance pact with Lockheed

Robins Air Force Base signed a partnership agreement with Lockheed Martin to provide depot maintenance and long-term sustainment for the ATP Sniper pod.
Cannon Air Force Base is a finalist for a top Air Force award - the best maintenance group in Air Combat Command. A team of inspectors visited the base last week to decide whether Cannon should be recognized.
A Gulf Coast F-16 wing that has protected the area's petrochemical industry and once included President Bush as a pilot is now threatened by lobbying and another wave of military base closures and realignment, military officials and residents say. The residents and members of the military community fear that the Texas Air National Guard unit, based at Ellington Field, could be moved or reduced in size.

Internet rumors hint Shaw could be closed

Like bettors handicapping a horse race, the military 'experts' of the Internet are predicting the U.S. military bases that will be closed after the next round of base closings.
Eielson Air Force Base is sending 70 people including F-16 pilots and support personnel to Singapore for three weeks to participate in an annual air-to-air combat exercise called Commando Sling.
