Venezuela looks for replacement F-16s

November 29, 1998 (by Lieven Dewitte) - The Venezuelan Air Force (Fuerza Aeréa Venezolana) is trying to buy 2 F-16 to replace aircraft lost on accidents in 1995. The planes' sale became possible in August, when the Clinton administration lifted a 20-year ban on major weapons sales to South American nations.
The administration would not have a problem with this, since they are replacement aircraft. Industry sources said Venezuela has already received tentative U.S. government approval to buy the aircraft but may not have the funding. On a side note, FAV F-16`s have been updated to receive the AIM-9L Sidewinder missile.
