Monday's announcement by the US Department of Defense that it is willing to provide Taiwan with 28 Pathfinder/Sharpshooter navigation and targeting pods. The proposed US$160 million deal, the main purpose of which is to improve the navigation and targeting abilities of some of the F-16s. The Pathfinder/Sharpshooter pods allow the F-16 to navigate at low altitudes and find targets more accurately. According to defense industry sources, the new equipment also greatly improves night flight safety.
