78th F-16CJ Crash Caused by Bearing Failure

December 3, 1998 (by Lieven Dewitte) - An F-16CJ from the 78th Fighter Squadron at Shaw AFB, S. C., crashed July 22 because of the failure of a "critical bearing in a linkage that controls air flow" to its General Electric F110 turbofan, the U.S. Air Force says. The pilot ejected safely, but the aircraft was destroyed.
