Lavoise "Critt" Crittenden Jr.

3 July 2000

Critt was a key person in the development of the F-16 avionics system. As the Manager of Attack Avionics he was one of the engineers that put the “fight” in the Falcon. He managed the development of a myriad of the early F-16 computer systems and helped a group of young engineers develop a quantum leap in the capability of the avionics with the F-16 C/D version and its offshoots. The excellence of the F-16 weapons capability would not have been possible without the hardware that was developed in his area. He retired in 1985.

Critt was a graduate of Oklahoma University in Electrical Engineering and earned his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering at SMU. He worked on many of the airplanes that were developed at General Dynamics before the F-16. Critt always demanded that we put our best work into the airplane. He had a voice that stood out in a crowd and commanded attention from all that were present. He also had one of the biggest hearts I have ever seen and went out of his way to help the younger engineers. When you had a tough problem to solve, Critt could always get you pointed in the right direction.

He is missed greatly and will always be remembered.

I remember Critt as an intelligent, very capable and focused individual. He always had the welfare of the project at the forefront of our discussions and meetings. Critt was also willing to listen to all ideas when it came to finding solutions to the many problems that faced the complex Avionic projects we were working on. This was important to the young members of the team, as the culture back in the late 70’s was to focus on the thoughts and ideas of the senior staff and discount the ideas of the “new hirers”.
