F-22 Weapons Bays
I was wondering what the dimensions are for the main weapon bays on the F-22A Raptor (length, width, height). Also, if anyone could answer the following I'd greatly appreciate it.
What is the length, width and height of an SDB configuration on the BRU-61/A rack, such as the one below...
Also, how much space does an AIM-120C-7 (or a group of three) take up when placed in the bay (with the fins oriented diagonally)?
Thanks...

(1) The F-22's weapon bays are about 3.9 meters long and about ~0.90 meters wide. It is deep enough to handle a bulky ordnance 0.35 meters in box section (eg. GBU-32 -- 1000 lbs JDAM).
(2) The BRU-61 rack with 4 SDBs mounted is 3.7 meters long and about 0.4 meters wide.
(3) An AMRAAM C/D takes up 0.318m (12.5") of box section with the body itself being 0.178 m. Because the fins overlap in staggered carriage, a trio of AMRAAMs fit into an approximately a 0.35 x 0.90 x3.9 m box (including clearances between the missiles) which is what the F-22 provides.
F-22A with JDAM and AIM-120C
F-22A with BRU-61/A and SDBs.
Follow up, does anyone know if the main weapon bays of the F-22A are capable of housing internal axillary fuel tanks (F-111 style) and how feasible would it be to modify them for such a configuration...?

Probably not, but it would be a good idea. Like Dozer said, you can't have enough fuel unless you're on fire.

The SDB rack is the BRU-61/A. It is required as of now. The BRU-61/A weighs in at 320lbs, each GBU-39/B weighs 285lbs. Total weight for 4 weapons and rack equal 1460lbs.

I just have one request....
If you are going to Hot Link Images from me... then put a link back to me...
Unless you plan on helping pay for my bandwidth.

No one who is a civilian and not doing work on the F-22 program needs to know exact dimensions on anything. However, regarding the F-22's weapons bays, I would be very curious to know if "they" have fitted a targeting pod in one of the side missile bays: i.e. a pop-out all weather,day/night, targeting pod. After all, the 22 is replacing the F-117 in that role. Such a pod would be VERY useful in letting the F-22 go after ground targets the pilot might otherwise only be able to wave 'See ya!' at as he flew past it.

In case you are more interested.... and the weapons rack is on a F15E not F-22

Problem solved, my apologies. And yes I am aware that the rack in question is on an F-15E. Currently however the BRU-61/A rack configuration is the only certified configuration for the GBU-39B. Given my question the carrying aircraft matters little as the configuration will always be the same, I just needed a clear picture of rack fully assembled.

Hi
I started to wondering about maximal overall dimensions of missile which can be put into F-22 weapons bay. AIM-120 (3.66 m length) fits those bay originally, but what about some bigger missile? I'm just thinking whether the size of F-22 weapon bay isn't to small to carry bigger missiles. For F-22 currently (and in close future) range of its AMRAAMs would be enough to successfully engage enemy fighters while avoiding detection itself.
Regards

What's the name of and does anyone have a closeup pic of the big orange box currently carried in the OT bays? I've built a 1/48 Nellis Raptor and I should probably replace 3 of the AMRAAM's with the orange box. Is it more than one or is it one big unit? If I can't get any pics I can just fake one up with the long shot pics I have.
