20+ years ago in the bad old days of the Cold War, the constant exercises and reminders that the godless commies were but only 15 minutes flying time away from bombing us into oblivion made the place feel like a prison sometimes. The base may be better these days. I'm looking for some kinda excuse to go back to Germany, but I'm too old to re-up. |

When I was stationed at Lakenheath back in the late 70's (F-111F transition days) A guy I worked with had an old Ford van painted red with a steam locomotive going down the tracks and named the van the Hooterville Express. |

| After 9/11 when the coalition was built, most of the countries sent representation to CENTCOM headquarters at McDill AFB. The result was a whole bunch of nomadic looking tents in thre parking lot with a temporary Mosque built for the Muslim guests. Place soon became known as Tampastan. |
