TC, I found this in Jon Lake's book on the Phantom:

"The first air-to-air kill for the F-4Dwas scored on 24 October 1967, when Maj. William L. Kirk of the 433rd TFS / 8th TFW claimed a MiG-21 using the externally-mounted gunpod."

It doesn't specifically state SUU-23 but heck, how many different gunpods were there back then?

Oops, hit <cr> too quick.. from the same book (paraphrased): in the summer of 1967 a 366th TFW crew in F-4C 64-0776 scored three kills, one by AIM-7, one by AIM-9, and one by gunpod. Doesn't say all three were on the same flight but kind of implies it.

Awesome. Totally Awesome. I had figured some Phantom crew had used the SUU-23 for a kill, but was not sure. BTW, there's also a SUU-16 pod, but I've never seen one on a Phantom. Have seen it on a Royal Navy Sea Harrier though.

Lawman!

Two seats, two engines.

God made the warrior's steed with only one heart.

God made the warriors with only one heart.

It is incumbent upon the 'one hearts' to preserve the tradition.

Ah, you gotta love the Eagle! Great jet. 107-0 record, give or take a few. I mean, hey, when you have to wonder over a couple that it may or may not have over the 100 mark, and it still hasn't been beaten, then you really don't have a lot to nitpick about do you? Besides, the ride is unbelieveable. But I still love the Rhino too. Would love to get a ride in that, although nothing I can think of could compare to the two rides I got in the Viper.

Well, you are in trouble when you have no gun, and you're missiles don't work correctly. That was the problem the Phantom had. They ended up slapping a SUU-23 on the Phantoms in Nam, and it was a pretty good stopgap. One major problem though: it created a LOT of drag. BTW, does anyone have any record of a Phantom downing a MiG with the SUU-23? I know some E models have shot down MiGs with the M-61, but I wasn't sure about the 23.

I have a book about fighters in Vietnam that showed some MiG kill markings on a Phantom with the date, type of plane shot down, and what weapon was used. One Phantom had two kills with the SUU-23, both of which were MiG-17s I believe. I don't have a scanner to show you guys the photo, but I can go home later and tell you what book it's in.

The Phabulous Phantom...in a word: LOUD!!!!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

When the Blues and T-birds flew 'em, quite possibly the noisiest airshows on record. The sound of Freedom ain't a whisper!

The image below is a painting called "Reunion Over Hanoi". It shows my good friend Col. Bob Buckey, USAF (Ret), who used to frequently buzz the Hanoi Hilton during Linebacker II to reassure the guys there, one of them a close high school chum of his, that they weren't forgotten and that they'd be home soon.
