Hi,
I am considering joining the Air National Guard, I have talked to the recruiter many times and got a very good impression. The unit is the 115 FW out of Madison WI, (flying of course F-16s).
I will be attending college with the year and starting on my bachelors degree, but while I am in college and coming out for the drill weekends, I want as much hands on experience with the jets as I can get. My question is what jobs allow this and give opportunities to be around the jets and pilots. I would also like to learn as much about the F-16 as I possibly can, my imression is that crew chiefs have the most contact with the jets and pilots and also become very knowledgable on the jets. Munitions, Avionics and the inspection personnel were also mentioned more than once.
If anyone could help with ANY advice about what job is best for getting first hand experience with the jets and pilots, I would really appreciate it.
Also if you wouldn't mind sharing your experiences good or bad, it would be a great help. Thanks!! |

Hey man, I enlisted and will be going to UPT soon (Vipers also). I know that everyone will try to tell you that this job is better or that one is, so this is just my recomendation. Ultimately all jobs are good as long as you do a great job!
ANY JOB IN THE OPS BUILDING!!! Then go to Maint. Both interact with the pilots but in Ops(Intel, Life Support etc) you are around them all the time. Lata! |

Of the jobs you mentioned:
Munitions does not get you around the airplanes other than to drop off bombs and away you go.
In my experience, more crew chiefs have gotten pilot slots than any other career field. I know of at least four in my Unit alone. That said, it's not the job you get, it's the kind of person you are. Join a career field that you have interest in. |

| Yeah if you're not down for long shifts in any weather, gettin greasy, turnin wrenches and any other facets of mechanics then maybe the CC job isn't for you. Avionics is around the jet, not as often aand I don't see them gettin greasy too often. They can b man launches tho as can some of the other specs. |

Heck,at our ANG unit it's the other way around! Our first crew chief to get a pilot slot is buzzing around in T-38's right now,weapons/ammo has put at least 4-5 people in the cockpit over the years. |

| Yeah, good guy, not the best with a wrench but he made the best of it. He knew, even in tech school that he would be in MOC. |

The bottom line is here is as I said, it doesnt matter. As long as you do a great job whereever you work, you will have a good shot. The majority of dudes from my unit come from WITHIN ops. Sure Crewchiefs are around the pilots... when they come and go flying but in MY Ops building, Intel and Life Support are around the pilots THE MOST. Hint, we all live in the same building. We all go to lunch together and go out after work. Getting to know the dudes on this level gives you a huge leg up. Yeah, when the board rolls around, they know they guys from other areas on base but they know you on a different level due to the face time. If you want a pilot slot... do the following:
1. Graduate tops in your class everywhere... including BMT.
2. Volunteer for as much as you can... LMAO yeah... be a Rope.
3. Go to your unit and be a stand out Airman. Raise the bar and be HIGHSPEED!!!
4. Get to know the dudes that you will be flying with. DO NOT KISS a$$... Get to know them. Go to the social pushes... etc.
5. Kick a$$ on your AFOQT/BAT.
Extra Credit HW: Save someones life in between... Civil or Military : )
( I was driving gome from drill and saw a lady hydroplane. She went off into a huge canyon and wrapped her car around a tree. I stopped like anyone would... and pulled her out of the car. She was pregnant and as I was carrying her up the hill the car started to catch on fire. Again, this is something that anyone would do and I just happen to be the one that saw the wreck... but as I topped the hill, I see an officer. He ended up being one from my base that worked in HQ with the Wing Commander! He tracked me down a few drills later and went out of his way to give me recognition) LUCK!!! )
Point Taken??? Look for a WRECK!!! |

Never seen him out on the line,he was recruited to be in MOC but had to go thru crew chief tech. school as part of the MOC position. He may not be the best with a wrench but he knows his stuff in MOC.
Our crew chief turned pilot is a sharp cookie,he's a civilian pilot who has pleanty of hours in various a/c,including Warbirds(he's flown into drill in a YAK trainer...show-off!).He also does airshows in his families RV-4 and knows the F-16 inside and out,I look forward to following his career. |
