Yup- the pic is from a joint US/Russian exercise in the Med from 2003(?). A bunch of our guys are on the deck touring it up, there were other pics of officers in the Sea Flanker cockpits too. I got these 8 x 10s from Ebay, they're pretty nice framed with a bunch of all sorts of stuff on the walls of my Fun Room!
Update: Here's a couple more off of the wall, when the Flying Tigers had bigger mouthes!
A-7D Corsairs sure aren't ugly to me! |

StolichnayaStrafer, thanks for that. I love the A-7 too!
Here is a vid` taken from the Kuznetsov, currently on a Med` cruise with 2 Sovremmeny class ships and escorts. A Frogfoot has a particularly heavy landing which damages the aircraft. Accidents do happen. The Su-33`s look cool though, but because there are no cats`, the launch weight for them is very low, ie they can only carry a light load of AAM`s and not a full fuel load.
Watch out for the escort destroyer being tossed about in heavy seas, 10,000 tons but looks to be a pig at sea keeping! I swear it turns into a submarine at one stage. Feel sorry for the crew on board.
Nice vid` though.

Definitely a great vid!
I got this press photo last year of the HMS Invincible steaming up the channel on 11/22/1980- I think it was her maiden voyage?
Love those Sea Harriers!
Funny though, the press release backing calls it an Anti-Submarine Cruiser, and the Admiral Kuznetsov is referred to being a Cruiser class vessel as well! |

Yes, Invincible class carriers were actually called "Through deck cruisers", simply to avoid calling them aircraft carriers. In the 1960s, when CVA-01 was canceled, the mere mention of "Aircraft carrier" and the huge costs incurred would send goverment money men running for cover. The phrase became a dirty word. Through deck cruiser was more acceptable. Just politics. The Kuznetzov AFAIK is actually a real deal converted cruiser, a little bit different.
I really miss the Sea Harrier, or the SHAR as it was known. However, we move with the times I suppose.
Don`t think that was Invincible`s maiden voyage as she was commissioned into the RN in July 1980 and actually launched in 1977, great pic` though. |

Ok, maybe her after commissioning voyage?
Different birds then:
My favorite Tomcat markings! Hmm, 2 to 1 odds with Croatian MiG-21s...
bets are open! |

Through deck cruiser with elevators in the middle of the deck to prevent fixed wing aviation, or so the bean counters thought. There is a SHAR flying privately in the USA, Its owned by Col. Art Nalls (USMC Rtd.) watch for it at air shows.

| My personal favorite is MiG-21, it isn't the most graceful looking thing in the world but it has a certain appeal to it. |

| Stoli-- That second pic of an A-7 dropping retarded bombs--that's 70-0955 and we had that jet in the Va Air Guard from 1981-91. Good to see that pic again! This pic was taken when it was at England AFB LA, probably just before it was transferred to us, since it no longer had the white underbelly. |

The greatest little plane that wasn't:
The F-5G, better known as the F-20 Tigershark.
I liked the BMW Ascot Gray paint job better though. |
