What about Musketeer? You know - there were three of them and it was "One for all, and all for one" Besides, it hasn't been used for an airplane before. All those Whatever II's are pretty lame.
There's another option I like. Since the F-117 is the Nighthawk, calling the
F-35 the Ghosthawk would keep it in the family. |

Peregrine
Peregrine comes from the Latin name "peregrinus" meaning "wanderer" ,”traveler” or "coming from foreign parts."
Peregrine falcons are sleek birds of prey, famous for their speed and beauty. They are known as the fastest bird on the planet.
The peregrine’s bluish upperparts, black cap, black moustache below the eye, white chin give it a striking appearance. It has dark brown eyes with yellow eye rings, a slate-blue beak. Large, strong feet and a powerful, hooked beak enable the peregrine to carry and eat its prey.
Peregrines are compact, fast birds with pointed wings. During a stoop or dive, peregrines may reach speeds of 200 mph. The air pressure from this bullet-like plunge might burst an ordinary bird’s lungs. It’s thought that the series of baffles in a peregrine’s nostrils slow the wind velocity, enabling the bird to breathe while diving.
I think “Peregrine” fits the F-35. |

Is it the fastest aircraft in the world? No
Therefore Peregrine doesn't fit it lol! |

Diamondback would not only name the plane after a snake, but also a computer mouse. Which is not desirable.
Griffon is already taken, Gripen means Griffon.
I think Phoenix is the best. It works in most languages aswell. I can see the Norwegian or the Dutch media referring to the 'Ghosthawk' or something equally foreign turning out quite.. awkward. |

I feel like it's getting about time to have a final poll with some new names.
This weekend I will go trough all posts in the F-35 name threads and draft a list of the most popular names. So feel free to post any good names that haven't been mentioned yet so I can include them.
Link: F-35 to be officially named before July 2006 |

Kestrel is pretty damn good... I think Phoenix is awful for the F-35. Razorback or Diamondback are too Hollywood.
Whatever name it gets, it will probably loose the official name in squadron service and get a cool nickname. Like the "Plastic Pig". Now actually, that`s a pretty good name.....hmmmmm. |

Raven has been used too often, examples Hiller 360 / OH53 and Robinson R44. How did that MASH song go again . . .
The eliminator is that the Raven name is also used for a small UAV.
On the positive side it was a well respected FAC call sign a long time ago . . . |

Like I posted a long time ago, I know that "Raven" has been used before, most notably, the EF-111. But the name would go very well with the F-35, as defined on Dictionary.com "To seek or seize as prey or plunder".
The other names listed here IMO, do not sound right or particularly catchy and probably would encourage an "unofficial" nickname contest real quick among its users.
Regardless, a short list has already been made. This list of names is extremely well guarded. I don't know anybody in the industry who has either seen it or can comment on it. I do like, as an alternative, what Tomassetti suggested as "Fury" and each service can be specific like the USAF is "Sky Fury", Navy is "Sea Fury", etc. Whatever it is, I sure hope General Mosely will make a good choice. |

| Knowing the people who pick these names, it will probably end up being called the 'Freedom Falcon' or something equally revolting. |

Well I like Butcher Bird but I know there is no way in hell that will happen. I too do not want to see Mustang II or Phantom XXX. If the Air Force names it after a bird then please no "Chickadees" or "Purple Martins."
Maybe we should name it after Bill Gates, since by the time the thing enters service he will be the only one that can afford to buy one... |
