You NEVER do a "wing low" landing in a fighter. We land in a crab. The gear and tires can take it.

Specifically, in the F-16 if you use roll inputs on short final, you dump the lift from that wing since the ailerons are also your flaps.

Cylon,

You said it! They've been teaching that in Fighters for over 40 years.

Salute!

Yep! Don't even think about landing the F-16 using the wing low technique (in a slip).

When the WOW switch detects touchdown, all the rudder-aileron interconnect crapola goes away. The rudder moves the wrong way, the flaperons move the wrong way, etc.

I have landed the sucker when crosswind was at legal limit (according to Nellis Tower, but they were cheating, as was I). Flight path marker was caged on one side of HUD and just flew the jet so as to drag my skinny butt down the centerline. No biggie. Soon as WOW activated, I could use the rudder to stay aligned with runway and also use flaperons to keep wings level. Crosswind that day was 25-30 knots.

To check out the wing-low method, another IP and I were getting used to the 'big tail' that became standard on Block 15's and later. In a family model. We had discussed the wing-low technique and decided to try it. Not a good move, but we were both highly-experienced Viper drivers and it helped.

So we touch down and WHOA NELLY!!!! All that cross-controlled aileron and oppo rudder became neutral! Trust me, don't try this at home.

So the crab is a good deal and the gear and tires can handle it. Just drag your butt down centerline and uase rudder to stay aligned once on the concrete.

out,

OK, back to original topic!

Taxi is a piece of cake.

When we were grounded due to the FLCS battery/EPU problem, we had to taxi and exercise the planes to keep all well.

So we decided to take our wives with us in the 'family model' for the taxi drill, how appropriate!

My wife, who had never even touched a flight control on any plane in her life, cruised that sucker straight down the taxiway pretty as you could be. Only trouble when was she tried to talk on the radio while she was doing it, heh heh.

My wingie was also in a family model with his wife and she followed us down the parallel taxiway just like the Thunderbirds do.

Ran up the motors, lit the burners, and resisted the urge to lift off just a few feet to say that our wives actually 'flew' in the jet. LOL. So we aborted at about 100 knots and taxied back in.

Neat deal for all, and wife proudly shows her pic at work. All dressed in flight bag, g-suit, helmet and mask, etc.

Ohhh maaaaan, those were the days my friends.
