How fast do you think a flame travels?

That ain't gonna happen (just ask a Vark pilot doing a dump and burn).

I vaguely remember hearing that the maneuver could not be performed under a certain airspeed for this reason. Is there anyone who could shed some light on this, as I can't seem to locate the report?? Confused

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing they cancelled today's flight for two reasons.

The electronic DD-175 wouldn't accept a flight time of less than 15 minutes, and...

they couldn't find a plastic spoon for the pilot's flight suit pencil pocket.

(It's dark now Shocked, we rise at dawnish)

There was a video (I have a copy but don't have the online link) with similar explanation to this text article:

Final flameout heralds the last year of the ‘Pig’ Singapore Air Show » February 2, 2010 by David Donald

http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/ ... t-year-pig

"... the highlight is the “dump and burn.” Thanks to the F-111’s unique design the fuel jettison pipe is located between the nozzles of the TF30 engines, but there’s an art to creating the spectacular “dragon’s tail” torching effect, as Parsons explained to AIN: “The fuel comes out of the dump-pipe as liquid, but then it mixes with the air to create a volatile mixture. You need to be in max afterburner or else it just won’t light. As we approach for the pass I push the engines to full afterburner. When they’re in full burner I call ‘Dump On,’ Fuzzy activates the dump and the mixture ignites. We fly the pass, and at the end call: ‘Dump Off,’ before powering back from full afterburner.

“We do two dump-and-burn passes in the show. One is the ‘dragon pass’ with the wings at 72 degrees sweep. Then we do the ‘dirty’ run, with the wings forward at 16 degrees sweep. It may look quite slow, but we’re still doing 250 knots.”

More at the JUMP.

Salute!

I don't know how many here have been in a jet when the fleet was grounded for one problem or another.

In the SLIF, we had a serious problem with the motor and instead of sitting down for a few months we taxied and ran up and went down the runway like a flight test "high speed taxi". Kept the hydraulic seals tight and mitigated any fuel leaks and.....

Later in life, we had the Viper flight control computer power supply problem. Also had some motor problems, but kept flying.

In both cases we taxiied and ran up and roared down the runway to maybe 120 or so knots and then aborted. We used data for "normal" problems, and we exercised all the systems.

A close friend of mine has said over and over that we early troops were all "test pilots". We didn't wear the neat patch from Edwards, but we discovered and dealt with things the engineers and such never imagined.

I am not worried about the new jets at Eglin. The jets and the ground crews and the pilots will be just like the ones I flew with in 1967, 1972 and 1979. If there are serious design problems, they will become apparent after a few weeks of flying. Some less serious problems will show up once the training program is running full ahead. They will be dealt with, and the history of the SLUF and Viper will be remembered.

Gums sends...

Who says the F-111 wasn't an air to air fighter? Check that AIM-9 on the left wing.

Just a feeble attempt at humor, perhaps too subtle for some.

This very well could be an air-to-air Vark...

gear down is the international sign of surrender. Very Happy

(BTW for Spaz, evidently Neptunus Lex crashed in a Kfir the other day)

'outlaw162'. Shocking sad news that NepLex is dead. I guess you have seen his post about the brake chute not working the day before "wrestling snakes in cockpit". I don't know any other details but to me it looks like he went off runway during landing at a high enough speed to crash into a building. I guess he was unable to eject at that slower speed? All my speculation of course and we will find out cause later. Apparently snow and fog about at the time also.
