You kidding right, ever since I have been around -220's I turned in my "engine mechanic" title and sewed on "engine borescope inspector" title. Phase, test cell, I-level. They just plain work. Now if I had a dollar everytime I had to pull a T4b for some stupid trend fault or chase a fan speed trend fault on 129's or 132's then I would be a little closer to retirement. Lets not even talk about the crappy aug fuel supply tube on GE's or changing the DEC. Bet it is easy on a 15 but on a 16 it isn't hard just [Link pending approval] Give me a DEEC. Or Aug fuel control on GE in the jet? No thanks, again not hard just annoying.
[Link pending approval] them UC's were a blast to [Link pending approval] now how many hours on that rig????? i would always take a GE over a pratt! |

| Oh God, not this P&W vs GE crap again. This has been argued/debated in other forums, go there if you want to keep it alive. This one was about an incident that had nothing to do with the engine contributing to it. No matter which make. |

UFC's? 220's? OK I'm puzzled...
I apologize, I took the bait, hook, line and sinker all the way to the skillet (engine debate) as in many threads before. To many plus and minuses on both sides. FAIL.

True, just spouting off a bit.
Neither engine type should explode while ingesting dirt at idle; simply choke out and die due to suffocation.
I'm shocked someone didn't derail the tread by stating the obvious; the F-35 will NEVER be able to dig a ditch like an F-16.
Those side-mount inlets are no good for excavation!

Are you stupid or retarded?
Since the motor took the beating in this incident, we are talking about the MOTOR ... and maybe the helmet bag? |

smines80 isn't either one. Which engine is better (PW or GE) has nothing to do with this thread. TEG's analysis was outstanding, but there are several other aspects of the Viper that 'took a beating' with this one as well - gear, brakes, nose cone, not to mention Monday-morning-quarterbacking the pilot and his Sunday jog from a soon-to-be-on-fire F-16. I'm just sayin'. |

VarkVet... did I miss something in the headline that said the MOTOR caused it to RUN OFF THE RUNWAY? Stupid is as stupid does. |

Engine arguments again?...
Anyway is there any indication of when we'll find out the results of the actual investigation? |

I don't think you will see anything on this one again. Class A is up to 2 million now, I don't see that in this incident!
Take it to the wash rack, change the motor, and do a hard landing inspection!
Block 30 is the best jet ever!!!!! |

Considering the engine could be "beyond economical repair" you're looking at $4M+ The whole engine is likely to have heavy FOD, it may not even be repaired. Much cheaper to overhaul one from AMARC.
Not sure about the F110, (non-modular), but an overhauled Core Module for an F100-PW-229 is $2M+ (Just the Core!)
The airframe don't LOOK too bad, but between the nose, inlet, gear, etc, there could be additional damage internally where the front portion of the aircraft is attached to the center body.
I say she hits Class-A easy, just for the motor's expense.

| Thank God the Pilot is safe,...but after watching the video repeatedly, i have observed that this jet was coming a wee bit faster then the previous jet, and it looks the jet strayed off the runway to the side. Secondly if you hear the engine sound of the Jet prior to ditching, it seems as the engine is shutting down, maybe due to technical malfunction. ANybody's guess! |
