Normally I stay out of this part of the forum as you guys tend to get a little nasty to each other but I gotta say the thread is misnamed if you think putting a radar in the nose of a B-1 and loading it up with AMRAAMs is "Dogfighting". Dogfighting is maneuvering your aircraft against another to gain a position of advantage to employ a weapon to kill him and to deny him the same. It is the most basic distinction between a fighter airplane and any other. This capability has proven to be important over and over as new radars and missiles have evolved always leading to the pontification that dogfighting is over. Yet anyone who knows the truth will admit that radars and missiles are not 100% PK, sometimes ROE requires you to close with the enemy, and sometimes you mess up and find an enemy in your shorts, and when you get there you must out maneuver him and his weapons to live and kill him. That is why 5th Gen fighters still have a gun. So carry on this thread debating the merits of a large airplane carrying a bomb dumps worth of AA missiles and a massive radar but take the word "doghfights" off the title please.

@Spudman,
that's of course true.

@jbgator,
I don't think anyone here insisted that the B-1 would be "dogfighting" at all, it was actually a lame tv documentation labelled that way and including the fictional B-1R which doesn't exist anyway.

While topics such as this may start out relating to the F-22, it is so broad that it will inevitably go way off topic discussing other things as shown in the recent posts here.

Because this topic was created before (and was moved to the "Technology" forum) and already exists there as kindly linked by FlightDreamz, it is better to continue the discussion there should you choose to do so.
