How fast is the Six? Everybody knows how fast it OFFICIALLY is, and someone knows how fast it really is, but they're not saying. All I know is that one day at Minot I saw one of our Sixes came back with the paint blistered off the leading edges of everything that was painted. No word from the pilot how fast he went. The AMI mach tape could go above 3.0, though.
I'd love to see a race between a Thud, Vark, and Greenamyer's F-104 for low-level honors. BTW, the Thud's VAI ducts were deactivated by the time I got on the jet in 1973 so its mach 2+ days were over by then.
I was quite fortunate to work on two jets that had the J-75. The P-19W in the Thud had a longer afterburner than the P-17 in the Six, and it had water injection. Hence the 2K thrust advantage. But oh, what a sweet BOOM the burner made when it kicked in! And the temporary silence when it kicked off made one wonder if the engine had quit. Ahhhh, those were the days! |

| problem with the 104,105,106 race is that by the time the F-104 got to top speed it would be out of gas!, down low I would give it the edge. Do know that the 106 could and would dust the F-4 and out turn it, and had better range!! |

The F-106 with the J75-P-17 is still 'officially' the fastest single engine jet aircraft.
1,525.95 mph (2455.78 km/h) at an altitude of 40,000 ft (12,190 m)
REF: http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/pe ... 0248.shtml
Other claims have never been confirmed or officially recorded.
Keep 'em flyin'

| I'm a former OV-10 FAC. We had a guy in our unit that had previously flown the F-111F at Lakenheath. I asked him one day how fast the 111 could go on the deck and he told me the information was classified. But, he said I will share this: "I've flown the F manually at mach [Link pending approval] at 400' AGL and mach [Link pending approval] at 1000' [Link pending approval]; I responded something like, "Holy crap, but that was clean in max blower, right?" "No, that was with stores and plenty more throttle [Link pending approval]; At that point I was scraping my jaw off the floor. I shared this with some of the other pilots in our unit and one of them who'd been a radar guy prior to going to flight school. He claimed that while working radars during an exercise in Florida they tracked a couple of F-111s on the deck over the water at mach 2! He swore it was the god's honest truth and that his radar team were just blown away by what they were seeing. Can't say that I know how accurate their radar data was, but given my other squadron mate's claim of [Link pending approval] a 1000' AGL, it might have been possible for a clean bird. Darkvarkguy might know [Link pending approval] |
