Hi all,

with the IAF receiving her Sufa in less than 24 hours, I was reading this article with great interest. It mentions the F-16I is fitted with the internal mounted FLIR viewer. Though I don't wish to sound too ignorant, I must say that, I don't have the faintest idea what is this new sensor. Appreciate if anyone care to enlighten.

cheers, Very Happy

The "Arutz Sheva" isn't the source you want to be counting on when it comes to Military stuff. Wink
The F-16I doesn't have an internal FLIR.

Shocked It is not? What a shame! The news agent might not be providing an accurate report on Sufa's hardware, it sure used the military lingo correctly. I am really curious. I know what is an internal FLIR, but never is my knowledge, an internally mounted FLIR viewer.

cheers, Very Happy

Maybe it is supposed to mean that the F-16I possesses the equipment and cables needed to add an internal FLIR later (just trying to guess...).

Hi hi, you're probably right and the most clever about it Laughing . It often happens, especially in "general" newspapers (I often read some absurd things in French newspapers about aeronautics).

The F-16I does have FLIR, just not internal. Look at the pictures, the pod hanging off to the pilots left is the navigation pod and the one on the right is the targeting pod. Pumpkin, the viewing of the FLIR from the LANTIRN pods is either on the HUD or one of the MFDs. I would assume this would be the same whether or not the sensors are hung off of the intake or internally mounted.

hi mohody,

I am afraid the LITENING III pod or the NVP is really nothing new for the F-16I. Least mention the viewing of FLIR picture on the HUD/CMFD. Hence, I hope that was not what the report was referring to. I will be surprise and excited if they were referring to viewing the FLIR picture via the HMD Helmet.

cheers, Very Happy

I saw a pic with Litening II and an AAQ-13 with it on there, maybe that's their MANTIRN combo

hi Ender,

why MANTIRN? with the NVP(TFR), the combination qualifies the 'L' in LANTIRN. Cool

yo DeepSpace,

you're well informed with the event here. Frankly, I have quit going Asian Aerospace. The air show lacks Eastern Block war machines. I was only fascinated with Israeli military manufacturers' participations in the past few shows.

cheers, Wink

Looking at the pictures of the cockpit in the article Pumpkin gave the link to there's nothing out of the ordinary about the layout. My thoughts are that they are talking about the MFDs, because FLIR symbology is one of the things you can select to look at.

However, if you read further into the article where it talks about who is making what for the "I" there is a companhy called Elbit Systems. To quote the article it states that Elbit Systems makes the head-up display (HUD), helmet display, mission computer, presentation computer and digital map, elevators, ailerons, fuselage stabilizers, and doors. Even further it states that a choice of helmet-mounted cueing systems is available that will allow pilots to direct sensors or weapons to his line of sight. Given this, they could very well be talking about that being the new FLIR viewer.

You know, I wish they would just come right out and say it!!!
