Just watching from the ground and understanding the landing procedure of the viper, pilots have to use the power to control the AOA on landing. Large throttle inputs seem common on landing, especially when conditions aren't ideal (or from lack of experience).
If the glide slope is way off right before touchdown, the easiest thing to do is apply power and go around. Most of the time, enough fuel is planned in for multiple approaches/divert/inclimate weather.
As for fuel cavitations, the only time that fuel flow is extremely disrupted is during negative -g manuevers, and if the pilot is using power like he is supposed to, pitching the jet up and down won't occur during landing.

Hey! I didn't think anyone was watching me when I first showed up at Cannon! |

Yeah, no kidding! You know someone put the control stick in the -38 right in the center of the cockpit?! Who does that?! |

I'd be surprised if this hasn't been posted elsewhere on these boards, but here is a link to a good article by Joe Bill (weren't they all good?) back in 1987. It discusses landing in general, not just crosswinds....

From this article http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/systems/j85.htm about the J85:
Quote:
The engine problems in the T-38 aircraft were being addressed with almost $289M in the FY2001-05 FYDP for J85 engine modernization and other propulsion upgrades. The T-38 Propulsion Modernization Program (PMP) is comprised of four contractual efforts: a J85-5 engine modification and ejector nozzle will be sole source additions to a current contract with General Electric, b) the inlet/former/bulkhead kits will be a competitive award; c) a task order will be established on the existing Contractor Field Team (CFT) contract for kit installation; and d) the T-38 software changes required by the PMP will be added to the existing Boeing contract for the AUP.

Cylon,
Laughlin has been full-up PMP for over a year now. By the way, we've got a few Moody jets on our ramp already.
In keeping with the thread, you land the Viper and T-38 the same in a cross-wind, in a CRAB. Period.

And like Lieven says... use the search function. Heck I didn't even need that, I knew when I saw the topic my first thought was that Gums and others explained this once already in another thread some time ago.
Off topic: For the new people here, if you read this whole thread you just saw a diverse level of experience of Viper pilots past and present post. ( always good to see them). |
