I'll tell you the same thing one of my TIs told me in Basic. He said, "Just keep your ears open, and your mouth shut, and you'll do fine."
Really, the hardest part is at the beginning, getting used to what you have to do, and waking up early in the morning with little to no sleep the night before. After a short while (maybe a week) you get used to sleeping and waking up at a certain time, and going to chow at a certain time. I already knew how to march and how to use a rifle, so that was no biggie for me. It is for some folks though.
Unlike the movies, your instructors really do want to see you make it, and if they see you are trying your best, they will go out of their way to help you. Granted, they won't do everything for you, but they are there to help. Ultimately, it's as hard as YOU make it for yourself, not how hard your instructors can make it for you.
Good luck. |

Biggest deal with Marine Boot is to be physically prepaired for it. If you start "getting in shape" a month before hand.... you wont be. You need to be really hitting it now. Running, Swimming laps, Lifting weights (tone not bulk), and some more running wouldnt hurt.
Alot of people do not realize just how high the physical standards are, the only people with a harder PT regiment are all special forces/ops.
3 mile run - minimum 24, I can tell you if you cant do 22 you are in serious trouble. 18 is perfect, but thats a hell of a run
100 situps in 2 minutes for a perfect score - 80 will do fine 60 or lower and you'll need to start getting points from the other two events.
Pullups - The thing that kill most people but the easiest place to get points for PT, 20 is a perfect. Most people have a hell of a time doing more then 12 especially if your a big framed person. But again this was where guys can make up for a bad run or a weak situp test.
Outside of that TC is pretty much on. When I went to OCS there was something my retired Master Gunny grandfather told me to keep in the back of my mind. To give you an idea where this is comming from, he was a DI for 10 of his 25 years. "Dont be in the first 3 and dont be in the last 5 at anything." The explination being if your in the first 3 theres an expectation that you should be helping those under you and your not pulling for the platoon just yourself. If your in the last 5 your a target for the heaviest "Attitude adjustment" because you obviously arnt motivated enough to use all your potential. |
