Whooooeeee!
Never had a drag race with a zipper, but I still think I could get from 400 to 800 quicker in the VooDoo, especially if all we used was mil power until 600. We had one brave soul in our sqd run the VooDoo out to max speed low altitude during our annual visit to Tyndall to shoot the Genie and Falcons. He melted some guide vanes and had paint on the intakes that burned off. Maintenance guys really liked him after that, heh heh.
Viper wasn't too bad, either. I would let student 'studly' (aka Joe Baggodonuts) light the burner at 400 knots and start a two gee turn. After 90 degrees we ususally had 700 IAS and maybe supersonic (Hill, 5000 MSL over the desert).
Thuds could cruise in mil at 600, as could the Aardvaark. Zipper could get there easy, but not for long as Thud or especialy Aardvaark.
One of the favorite quotes of Viet Nam was a Thud jock who was hauling butt outta Bullseye with a Mig trapped at deep six. Rest of his flight was trying to join for mutual help. Lead asked, "How fast you going?" An unusual period of silence allowed the whole strike force to hear, " I'M GOING A THOUSAND MILES PER HOUR!!". Heh heh. I always laugh about that one.

| That was modeled after our CF-104 ser# 850 being flown by one of my best friends, Sharkbait. I've attached a pic of the kids a few years back... |

Habu, The slow light means the air inlet temp is 100º C in our "older" F-104's.
Habu2, Yup one of them ain't right... Seriously this was its retirement flight and I would guess the standby was Tango Uniform. |

Hey! Regarding the V limits on the AR Probe and TIPS: SEA vets have informed me those numbers were nice to know but exceeded when necessary (and without attention).
More "Book Limits"-One individual said on his first strike, he was boring in on a ground target and during the pull out and escape the jet didn't seem to be accelerating well...discovered he had left the Flaps at Takeoff/Maneuvering (15 LE, 15 TE) and recalled accelerating into M 1 during delivery!
Yes, these guys exceeded stores limits too.
Cheers,
Zipper |

Unbelievable, no one had anything to say about the Zipper for two years ?
Ok, I'm digging this up because I'm looking for some info:
1. What was the most current dash-1 for the last years of use, for the F-104C-10 (57-0910/0930)? I have scanned manuals of F-104A,B,C,D from 1968, and F-104C from 1959, there are some differences, wonder which document was used.
2. The LABS. Which one was it ? I spend last week going through books and internet trying to find the one used on F-104Cs, and all I got was one low resolution photo of the left panel showing two oversized cylinders (one yellow, one grey) were those timer covers, or the timers dials, can't tell from the photo. Know only that this LABS was not used on any other jet at that time, and later (CF-104 and F-104G got different ones or only the timers).
3. Seriously, why no one took a photo of this jet cockpit with lights on ? I know there is no time during flight, but at ground system check ? Really, there are no photos of lighted F-104 cockpit! |

Whatever the most current Dash 1 change was in place at the most recent time that it was flown is the Dash 1 that LEGALLY should have been used. For example, if your 1968 manual was the most current change that was in place, then that is the one which crews should have used.
As for your other questions, I'd recommend sending a PM to JR007. He is our resident Zipper expert, and most likely has more 104 time than anyone on this site. |
