Hey all.
Just wanted to introduce myself. I've been in just over 9 years and a Viper guy on paperwork. What do I mean by that? Here's my career.
Got to my first assignment, Cannon, in 98 and worked TA. Left Cannon in 2000 for Osan hoping to get on the line. Worked TA that year. Got diverted from Luke back to Cannon in 2001. With Crash Recovery experience, I of course still didn't get to the line. Worked W&T/Crash Recovery till I deployed to Baghdad in 2003. 2 of the best things came out of that deployment. I met my wife and I came back to Cannon with a PCA to the 523. Crewed my only airplane which was "triple cripple". End of 2004 my wife and I got a joint spouse to the one base we didn't want---Nellis. I figured at least if I can keep crewing jets and be with her I could make the best of it. Of course I was sent to Phase. Volunteered for a joint spouse overseas remote to get out of Nellis, Phase, and go back to the line. Her orders got cancelled, I got a follow-on back to Nellis, and right now I'm sitting at my computer as the UDM/VCNCO/all around nonner at Osan. |

| I'm so sorry. Accept my condolences. Look at the bright side, you've avoided being a Tool Room Commando. I spent all my time on the line with the exception of Aero Repair at the Kun. I always wanted to get into TA. Got my wish, working TA at Creech as a civilian and Love it. The diversity make it fun. Parking Cessna's in the morning and C-17's in the afternoon and everything in between. My favorites are the helicopters. Marshalling in three dimensions. The USAF helo pilots are pretty tame but watch out for the Army and Marines. They'll come right down on top of you. A lot of Z thinking there. |

| I also had some TA time and it was great. 3 years at Bitburg was the coolest thing that ever happened to me. |

falconfixer333,
I have sent you a lengthy PM - plz read it.
For all others - I had a UDM/VCNCO job (and about 20 alternate jobs) at Osan 98-99 (hated it for 2 months) then fell in love with learning the non-maintenance side of maintenance. It opened many doors for me from 99-2007. Including an accompanied tour back to Osan 2002-2004 where I worked on the MXG Staff. Not many F-16 crew chiefs lobby the South Korean Joint Chiefs for $30Mil to build and overaul aircraft shelters. Many, many projects that looked pretty good on my resume when applying for my current job. Being a mechanic is great, but "F-16 Mechanic 20+ years) is pretty narrow on a resume for a Non mechanical job.
I'll say this, and Stu knows this as well, we call it a noner job - but I worked many 12 hour shifts and weekends in those jobs - pulling my hair out at times. |
