Hey, i have a question about the F-15's F100-PW200/220(E)/229 engine. Why don't they use the "turkey feathers like on the F-16's PW200/220(E)/229's, I seem to remember that the feathers were introduced with the 200. So why doesn't the F-15 use them?

I seem to recall hearing something about vibration causing trouble for the turkey feathers with the two engines so close together.

They had them earlier in the As and Bs, but they were removed. From what I understand, they were a PITA.

PITA = "Pain In The A$$" (or "Ar$e" for some of our European compadres... Wink )

And in Dutch (sorry if I butcher this...): Pijn In De Ezel

Laughing Yeah, I try to keep it as censored as possible. Acronyms, the Phonetic Alphabet, and the use of a randomly placed dollar sign or asterisk can cover up some of the not-very-Disney-esque GI language. Wink

Anyway, if you spot a pic of the Eagle with turkey feathers, you know you are looking at an old F-15 pic. Well, that and you may see maintainers in the pic wearing OD Green fatigues. Wink If you happen to see maintainers with the OD Green fatigues, and color patches, then the pic is pre-1981 (the year the AF went to subdued patches on fatigues).

As I recall, the turkey feathers were removed from the Eagles in 1984, but it may have been before that. I'll have to take a look at some of my oldest Eagle pics and see.

Embarassed Sorry dude! It's only been 19 years since I've been to Holland. I'm surprised I remember THAT much, what with all the "full-strength" Grolsh I put away! Wink Smile (still my favorite beer, BTW...)

Ah, Grolsch, you were at Soesterberg at the 32nd fighter wing?
I have some pics of the Zulu hangar there. We use it to scrap old F-16's now.

Somewhere amongst my stuff, I have some good pics of the Zulu Alert Eagles going full blower down the runway at Soesterberg. Wish the AF had never left CNA. Nice base, and a great assignment, from what I've been told.

Here are some pics of Zulu as it stands now. I hate the klaxon that starts when you open or close the doors. When you stand next to it you become deaf for a couple of minutes.

Nope. Never was in the miliatary. Did a sim job for Singer-Link at Twenthe in 1988 that took about 4 months to complete. A Grolsch brewery was just down the road in Enschede (the old one, not the new one). We took the tour...many times.... Laughing

What were we talkin' about? Oh yeah...the Eagle's turkey feathers. An old boss o'mine that used to work Eagles in Saudi said they were removed due to vibration issues (which someone mentioned earlier), but he didn't elaborate.

So if the Eagle removes 'em, but the Viper keeps 'em, what aerodynamic role do they play? Drag reduction perhaps? Aero noise maybe? I'd think substantial high-frequency nozzle vibration would occur on a Viper without feathers when the aft airflow passes over the nozzle sections where the feathers normally live. Kinda like blowin' over the lip of a soda pop bottle, except you'd have to blow a 500 knot airstream. Laughing

But I'm no aero guy so ICBW.

Ah, another Twenthenaar! Did you live at Zuid Kamp those 4 months? Yeah, i think was a pipeline directly from the Grolsch brewery to the Messes. lol

From what i have heard the Turkey Feathers reduce drag around the nozzle.

Nope again. We stayed at a nice place in Delden call the ApartHotel (English version). Nice rooms, big tennis court, REALLY cute female staff! Wink Apparently it's still there after lo these many years. Would absotively LOVE to go back sometime! Cool
