The bad thing here is nobody is talking about Fargo. What a great unit that is getting screwed by the system. All that experience thrown out the window. What a shame.[

Next are the ANG units operating "Big Inlet" Block-30 aircraft.

Blue indicated units that will continue F-16 operations.
Red indicates units that will de-activate/change mission and/or aircraft.

115th FW / 176th FS Madison RAP, WI. Continuing F-16 operations and gaining between four and six additional "Big Inlet" F-16s from the de-activating 523rd FS of the 27th FW at Cannon AFB, NM.

120th FW / 186th FS Great Falls IAP, MT. Transferring some aircraft to the 187th FW / 160th FS of the Alabama ANG and to other units and converting to F-15C/D - some from the 3rd Wing from Elmendorf AFB, AK - during 2008.

140th FW / 120th FS Buckley AFB, CO. Continuing F-16 operations and gaining further aircraft from the de-activating 523rd FS of the 27th FW at Cannon AFB, NM.

149th FW / 182d FS Lackland AFB, TX. Continuing F-16 operations as a Formal Training Unit and gaining further aircraft (primarily F-16Ds) from the de-activating 178th FW / 162nd FS in Springfield-Beckley, OH.

150th FW / 188th FS Kirtland AFB, NM. Continuing F-16 operations and gaining eight aircraft from the de-activating 523rd FS of the 27th FW at Cannon AFB, NM.

178th FW / 162nd FS Springfield-Beckley, OH. De-activating and transferring aircraft to other units among those the 149th FW / 182d FS at Lackland AFB, TX. The base had originally expected to hold the training mission until at least 2015, but the Defense recommendations would remove the flying mission in 2010.

183rd FW / 170th FS Capitol Apt, IL. Continuing F-16 operations until 2010.

187th FW / 160th FS Dannelly Field, Montgomery, AL. Continuing F-16 operations and gaining additional "Big Inlet" aircraft from the 120th FW / 186th FS of the Montana ANG.

After the BRAC changes the following unit(s) will also operate "Big Inlet" Block-30 aircraft. (These plans are current as of November 2006 and are subject to changes).

122nd FW / 163rd FS Ft. Wayne, IN. Retiring current Block-25 aircraft and re-equipping with "Big Inlet" Block-30 aircraft presumably from the 419th FW / 466th FS AFRC from Hill AFB, UT.

Still unaccounted for are the "Big Inlet" Block-30 aircraft from the 523rd FS of the 27th FW at Cannon AFB, NM, not going to the units in Wisconsin, Colorado and New Mexico - appx. 10 aircraft.

Further "Big Inlet" Block-30 aircraft will be released from the 80th FS / 8th FW at Kunsan AB, Korea, as this unit will receive the Block-40 aircraft from the 18th FS / 354th FW at Eielson AFB, AK. The 18 FS will become an Aggressor unit in PACAF and some sources have stated that the "new" Aggressor aircraft will be those "Big Inlet" Block-30 currently operated in the 80th FS in Korea.[/quote] Mad

While technically Springfield will be outta the flyin' business where USAF is concerned, there will still be jets there when the Dutch FTU spins up, if only until 2010. Who knows? Maybe that'll get extended and even add other countries? Springfield was my last sim assignment before departing DoD work, so naturally I'm a little biased. Wink

I got an e-mail today from the 944FW at Luke telling me that ALL of their Vipers will be gone by mid-January. That really stinks, since I was hoping to shoot them one more time while I'm at Luke next month.

A bit was written by me on page 5 about the Fargo unit - 119th FW / 178th FS.

"Happy Hooligans".

A truly great out-fit and unique in the US Viper community this unit has achieved quite many milestones over the years. I have chosen to make this separate article for the "Happy Hooligans".

Once being part of several F-16 units in the NORAD air defense chain flying the F-16AFD version, the 119th FW / 178th FS the "Happy Hooligans"is the last operational ANG unit flying the Block-15 F-16ADF version.

The 2005 BRAC decisions will turn the 119th into a transport unit now operating a couple C-21s and ultimately Predator UAVs as well as the Future Light Cargo Aircraft.

Their current Block-15 F-16ADFs in the 119th and the AZ ANGs 162nd FW are in the process of retiring to AMARC with several examples already being stored there ending the USAF operations of the F-16ADF variant.

Some milestones achieved by the 119th FW;

March 1990 - Converted from F-4Ds to Block-15 F-16A/Bs. These Vipers were later converted to the ADF standard.

October 1994 - Won the bi-annual "William Tell" air defense competition at Tyndall AFB, FL.

September 1998 - Assumed the alert det. at Langley AFB, VA.

March 1999 - Adopted a general purpose mission still flying the F-16ADFs and manning the alert det. at Langley AFB.

September 11 2001 - Scramble of the two alert aircraft out of Langley AFB, VA and taking an active part in Operation "Noble Eagle"/homeland defense in the years to come.

March 2006 - Conducting more than 70.000 accident free flying hours.

All the best to the Hooligans.

Greetings,

Henrik.

Just found by searching "YAHOO! News":

KXMB CBS12 Bismarck reported:

Quote:
Two special Fargo F16s to be on display

Dec 22 2006 1:42PM Associated Press

(Jim Monk, WDAY, Fargo)
FARGO, N.D. (AP) Two special F-16 jets from the Fargo-based 119th Fighter Wing won't be taken to the aviation boneyard.

National Guard Lieutenant Penny Ripperger says both planes flew over the nation's capital after the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.

Ripperger says one of the F-16s will be on display at the Air Guard base in Fargo, and the other will be flown to a museum at Mc-Chord Air Force Base south of Tacoma, Washington.

Lieutenant Colonel Brad Derrig, who flew the plane on 9-11, is to fly it to the museum next Tuesday.

Ripperger also says a special ceremony is planned for January 16th when the final F-16 is scheduled to leave Fargo for the Air Force boneyard in Arizona.

One was 82-0926. That is the only one I've been able to ID.

From the "Arkansas Democrat Gazette":

Quote:
With more planes, state’s units likely to be short-handed

BY AMY SCHLESING

Posted on Sunday, December 24, 2006

[...] The Pentagon recommended to the BRAC Commission that the 188 th lose its aging F-16 fighter jets without receiving any new planes. It would have been a wing of Air Guardsmen without a mission.

The BRAC Commission decided the 188 th would transition to the A-10 Warthog, a heartier, bunker-busting jet, and its F-16 s would go to the California National Guard. Half of the wing’s F-16 fleet has already been transferred.

The 188 th will receive 17 of the 20 allocated A-10 jets by the end of the current federal fiscal year, Oct. 1.

“On April 14, we plan to fly our last local F-16 flight,” said Col. Kevin Wear, 188 th commander. “If everything works as planned, that F-16 will escort the first four A-10 s [to the Fort Smith base. ]”

Those planes will be used to train the wing’s aircraft maintenance crews over the following three months.

“There will be no substantial flying at that time,” Wear said. “Those planes will be broken down and used as maintenance trainers.”

The wing has 13 pilots in A-10 training right now, with more heading for training after the first of the year.

The wing is third on the list of all A-10 wings for an avionics upgrade. The conversion of the wing’s 20 planes should be complete within the next two years, allowing it to move into the deployment rotation again.

“As far as overall conversion, there are so many massive changes going on the National Guard, massive conversions, that we got in the cycle early,” Wear said. “It may be the smoothest conversion Air Guard-wide.” [...]

Jon,

I guess the 57th FW aircraft will be the new Thunderbirds!
