This cool 2 Billion would probably buy them around 35 block 50s.
The military expenditures for columbia in FY01 was estimated at: $3.3 billion, which is a bit more than Chile, which recently ordered 10 F-16s.
But I have no clue about the political situation. Would the US sell Vipers to Columbia? |

| Yes but you have to remember that they have 290,000 soldiers to pay and 2 billion dollars it is too much and the whole PLAN Colombia was 1 billion dollars. Also the minister of defense of Colombia cried up when the Bush administration just want to give 110 millions dollars in aids fron 2004. Then I don't see that news is true. 2 billion dollars will buy around 60 and 80 F-16 tooo much for a latin country. And Chile bought 10 F-16C block 50 with 660 millions dollars. |

The planes on themselves only cost around 25million USD each. The Chilean 660 millions were for the F-16s AND the support package that included training, spare parts and weapons. Columbia would also need the support package so they wouldn't be able to purchase much more than 35 jets with 2 million USD.
But I agree, Columbia is not going to buy them! |

The only way I could see Colombia acquiring F-16s would be if Venezuela were to replace its older F-5s and Mirage 50s with additional planes.
Since Hugo Chavez has done a lot to burn bridges with the United States, the planes he buys might be either FC-1s from the PRC or MiG-29s from Russia. |

News from SEMANA, the principal colombian magazine
"... Before leaving the Colombian Air Force Command, the general Velasco welcomed a recommendation of the South Command of United States, in which intends the government to buy North American airplanes of medium yield that can land in airports located in the forest. The idea is that the purchase is subordinated to that the American government paves the airstrip of Marandúa in the Vichada and the Colombian those of Araracuara in Amazons and Mitú in the Vaupés. The proposal also contemplates the purchase of planes F-16 of North American production that can be modernized in the country...".
