I've been flying Falcon 4.0 for the longest time and just learned of the forum here. You guys really know your stuff. So consider me the freshest newbie.

I'm a flight science major at western michigan university and I'm planning on joining the military or getting my cfi out here. One of the two. Right now the marines are promising flight spots.. I'd love to get my hands on a JSF but the F-16 is my favorite beyond all aircraft.

General dynamics definitely outdid themselves Cool

Nope I'm definitely trying out next semester though. Our school also just got a new dean so a lot of the curriculum is changing. I'm worried about getting my hours in right now.

Me and another student pilot are looking to present somekind of aerobatic team to the new dean. Maybe he'll go for it. Cool All we gotta do is get some sponsors and one other person to join from our school thats in the flight program and we're all set. But its all probably just wishful thinking considering the current market Confused

I wouldn't even try... Besides, there's already an intercollegiate aerobatic competition set up. You'd probably have to join that. I treid to get the dept head at Mt.SAC to join it, but he flat out refused. Don't mean to shut you down, I think it's possible....if you wanna devote about 20-30 hours to it a week.

And yeah, WMU guys have always been good at aircraft ID. That was my best event, ranked 22nd in 2000 and 13th overall at nationals in 2002. Wink

Aircraft ID? What kinda A/C do you ID? I can't even tell the difference between a Block 30 and a Block 40 F-16. LoL.

yea thats what it was. The intercollegiate aerobatic competition where each university has to compete in at least three events.

We're just feeling the idea out right now. I mean we already have the Extra 300's just sittin on the ramp. The only other thing they're used for is abnormal attitude recovery and spins. Rolling Eyes

You were a member of the WMU flight team in 2002 or just placed 13th at nationals. cause as I recall WMU won nationals in 2002. Smile

I'm working on my privates and most likely all the way to multi-comercial. I was thinking of going to the gulfstream academy or joining the ANG and gettin my hands on a viper. Cool

No, I was on the Mt.SAC (Mount San Antonio College, CA). And I placed 13th in the aircraft ID event. We didn't win overall that year, but we did win Top Two Year School, and we were 8th overall, which is pretty damn good for a 2-year school Smile And yes, WMU did win that year,

Luckily we don't have to differentiate between variants, just types.

A slide of an aircraft, any aicraft (though we try to stick to a gentleman's agreement of 50 of the type produced at least) for three seconds, then you have 15 seconds to identify: manufacturer, type, common name.

Are the aircraft you have to ID civilian, military or both?

Like I said, you try to stick to the '50 rule' of there having to be 50 of the type of aircraft produced for it to be eligible for the test, be it civil or military or whatever. However, this is not a steadfast rule, as it's not written in the by-laws. And some of the most well known aircraft do not meet the 50 rule, so you have to fudge a little. So anthough you can technically show the Locknorthamerigrumman XFVYST-1-40 Dodobird prototype technology demonstrator (fictitious name added for effect), we don't usually do, because no one will know what the hell it is. We try to make it fun and challenging, not impossible.
