The eye is 'designed' to see green best based on the mix of rods and cones or something. I have one of them 'dangerous' green laser pointers and one of the red ones. Due to the differences in the eyes the green is something like 4 times as bright as the red one although they are both the same power output (5mw). You can also see this with the new LED traffic lights that are becoming prevelant in this area of the country. The green ones seem to light up the area for blocks while the red ones are much more muted in appearance. They both have about the same output power though.
I found a chart somewhere that listed the apparent brightness of different lasers based on their wavelength. I can't remember for sure what the baseline was but the red I have is 635NM and the green is 532NM. Their relative numbers on the chart were seven and twenty-eight times the baseline respectively. The 532NM was almost the peak of visual stimulation.

| That's on the right track, LinkF-16SimDude. In a way, human eyes see green better than other colors. The green-sensing cones in your retinas can discern a greater range of green shades than the other color types can with their respective colors. Green is also pretty "neutral". Other colors can appear harsh, like red text on a blue background, but green is the easiest on the eyes. That's why things like cutting mats, automotive gauge lighting, things in hospitals, are typically pale green. |

Does anyone what the Total FoV and the Instantaneous FoV are for both the WAC and WAR HUDs?.
Cheers

The bk 40 HUD (wide angle) is a pain because if you don't look (almost) exactly straight through it, you can't see some of the symbology. If your seated-height is wrong or if you happen to be looking through the HUD at an angle (dropped my line-up card...again) then the symbology is F*&king gone. The 30/50 HUD doesn't have that problem. Plus the framing on the 40 HUD was larger for the double-glass and generally I didn't care for it.
And before somebody flames me and says "of course you need the seated height to be correct..." or "of course you need to look straight through the HUD on all blocks" - all I'm trying to say is that if you are looking over your shoulder, flying DBFM, and you try to take a quick peek at your HUD through the corner of your eye - it's nice to be able to see something besides a blank space because you're off-axis! |

Sorry for bringing up an old post.
I was in discussion about HUDs for the game F4AF. Anyhow someone said that there was no HUD in the backseat of a 50/52. Now I don't work the 50/52, but the blocks here at Luke have HUDs in the backseat, unless they were removed for maintenance. |

| Sorry for the double post but what I meant to say is there is no HUD in the AFT cockpit in our D models here at Luke. You must be thinking about the MFDs. |

| Some sort of video screen. I don't think it's a HUD but looks like it's diplaying LANTIRN or some other NAV pod video. Might be part of the CCIP mods to the block 40s, we don't have them in our block 25s |

It is displaying the HUD. BTW maybe not all family models have those, but a lot do. The LANTIRN and Nav Pod video shows up on the MFD's. |

| That vidoe screen has terrain features displayed. You can also display LANTIRN on the HUD in the block 40s. |

| I just searched it up, it's a HUD "repeater" on the block 40/42 aircraft. |

The "HUD Repeater" in the last few posts is called the Aft Seat HUD Monitor (ASHM). It's basically a militarized monochome TV screen (or maybe it's color nowadays?) that repeats what's being seen by the front seater to include the out-the-window scenery (barns, cows, terrain, runway approach, etc.) with all appropriate symbology overlaid on top. It's everything you'd see thru the HUD if you were up front. Most, if not all, US Block 40/42 sedans have an ASHM as standard equipment.
Raptor_DCTR: I suggest cross-checkings a tail number of one of your grocery-getters that don't have an ASHM against the database here and see if it lists what block it is. It's possible it's not a US Block 40/42 or a foreign bird in US markings.

In the American Block 50/52 sedans, there is no ASHM AFAIK. However foreign 50/52s may actually have it. Depends on the particular customer. But in the non-ASHM equipped jets, there should be a switch somewhere in the aft cockpit that pipes the HUD video onto one of the two aft MFDs. This is essential if you're an IP in the back and need to monitor what the stud in front is doin'. Also, I'm not sure but there used to be a periodic aft seat landing requirement that had to be checked off (at least in the training units), so being able to see the HUD info is a must. |
