Yes, as quoted from the Dallas Morning News officials at Lockheed Martin Corp. hope President Bush will announce the winning name in a visit to the factory proposed for July 7.
Also see Jeffs article: F-35 will finally get its name tomorrow.
Besides the name Phoenix introduced in this forum, the official favorite seems indeed to be Lightning II but I don't know if it is a final decision yet. |

Rumor here suggests Lightning (II) is pretty much it.

I'd like it, but something tells me that the use of a "Cat" name would severely piss off both the Navy and what's left of Grumman .
That said, it looks like Lightning II will be the name . |

| Whatever the name is the operators will call it something else and the troops at 3AM on Sunday morning will call it something else. It will be what it will be. |

| I have mixed feelings about this one, but I did vote for it out of the available possibilities. It could do a lot worse for a name. The P-38 was a helluva frame and pretty much served the same role as the F-35 will. I think in this sense, it totally makes sense. |

| Thank you all for voting and participating in the thread. Phoenix was your choice... but unfortunately, General Moseley decided otherwise: US Air Force names F-35 Lightning II. |
