Yes, as <a href="index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&p=66249#66249">quoted from the Dallas Morning News</a> officials at Lockheed Martin Corp. hope President Bush will announce the winning name in a visit to the factory proposed for July 7.

Besides the name Phoenix introduced in this forum, the official favorite seems indeed to be Lightning II but I don't know if it is a final decision yet.

Rumor here suggests Lightning (II) is pretty much it.

Whatever the name is the operators will call it something else and the troops at 3AM on Sunday morning will call it something else. It will be what it will be.

I have mixed feelings about this one, but I did vote for it out of the available possibilities. It could do a lot worse for a name. The P-38 was a helluva frame and pretty much served the same role as the F-35 will. I think in this sense, it totally makes sense.
