One option is to go AFRES or ANG and then apply for an AGR tour. It is considered active duty with all the benefits but you generally stay in the same unit your whole career. There are openings for Traditionals in the ANG/AFRES for E-4's. Just depends on whether or not you live near enough to a 16 unit. But even if a unit doesn't have -16's they are usually more than happy to crosstrain folks. Let's say you got your foot in the door with a cargo unit. You can just about be full time with those outfits just due to their taskings.

I don't know what recruiters your talking to but here at Selfridge ANGB MI we just gained one guy that was out for get this 15 years not even a 16 guy he worked F-15's! We also have anouther inprocessing that was out for around 10 years both are going into traditional Crew Chief jobs not fulltime. There is hope you can call our recruiters in Michigan and you can find thier numbers online easily or if not let me know. Once your in you can get some experience back in you can put in for AGR or Technician openings, in fact right now we have 1 opening at our Alert detachment AGR types and possibly 2 technicians opening in the fall. Don't give up if our recruiters can do this I know other states can do the same. Also look into LM like they said the UAE is looking for people also West Virginia is hiring like crazy to fill C-5 slots right now they need to hire almost 80 acft maint types in the next year or so. Check this link for their openings you can see they have alot open already http://132.50.10.131/hro/jobs.htm good luck....
