Saw this article on the web... Ok, it is`nt Reuters, is there any truth in it??
If it is real, who do YOU guys think should pay for it? I think the contractors should be handed the bill....It seems to centre around the "forward boom" section which apparently wasn`t heat treated correctly. The section is titanium, the incorrect heat treatment will reduce fatigue life/airframe hours, unless corrected. It may mean removing the wings to rectify. VERY expensive...
They also allude to a tail section structural problem.... A LOT of the jets already handed over to the airforce are said to be affected. One thing is clear, it is a process/production glitch, NOT a design issue...

Thanks GUY`. I have seen this a couple of times on the net. I even posted on the thread you pointed to. This is in addition to a supposed tail section glitch...
The above link points to something more serious... Removing wings to retrieve a major fuselage structure to re-apply heat treatment is not a minor problem is it? Surely it cant be more journalistic wishful thinking for the anti-Raptor brigade?
Can anyone definitely tell us this is rubbish? |

Hey Snypa....very good question. These things do happen with all new aircraft. There are a few different things they may do to correct this issue. It is not a safety of flight issue only a lifetime issue. One thing they may do is fix during the first PDM or depot level maintenance. It will not be a issue for future procurement. The subcontractor may have a penalty clause in there contract but I'm sure it won't totally reimburse the USAF. It will only soften the blow.
As new aircraft are released it can really be a nightmare because no one really knows what can happen. There is nothing worse then being on swing shift on a Friday night for an immediate TCTO to be issued, and for some unknown reason to mankind....it's always Friday night! |
