Dont admit to anything you have not already told you recruiter. Im not saying to lie, but if it has happened to you or you have done it you should have already fessed up. MEPS job is to verify that you are Physically and Mentally (if you still have to take the asvab) quallified to serve in the US Military. If you can pass the examanations there and have already passed all the pre-screens you recruiter has put you through you will be fine. Get ready for a long day, waking up at o dark thirty just to wait in lines in your undies with a bunch of other dudes getting checked out.
Good Luck
Peter (i am a recruiter at the moment) |

Enlisting may not be the best way to an AD UPT slot, but in the guard... if you wanna fly...enlisting gives you several distinct advantages over applicants who dont. The first is you are GUARANTEED an interview at your unit. Thats kinda a big advantage... About 300 folks apply to an average fighter unit. About 100 of them have the same stats, grades etc... the things they look at. THEY ONLY INTERVIEW ABOUT 10 to 15. Thats a pretty good card to have in your pocket if you ask me. The second advantage is... In the guard, you are being voted into a club(kinda)... if they know you, know that you kick a$$, know that you are a "Model Airmen" and can stomach being around you (drink beer...etc)...you have an even better chance of getting in. They look for two things when hiring you... 1. Will you make it thru the training? 2. Can they work with you for the next 20 years? You have shown them better than most (granted you have shown them this) by kicking a$$ at your job, training, test, school... etc etc. The second thing they are looking for will be taken care of grantd you arent a dousche bag. When I was competing, guys who werent enlisted used to look at me and say "Dude, you are in like flinn, I dont have a freaking chance with you enlisted dudes around." One of them even enlisted the next year was selected recently. There are other benefits that exist for a young chap like CBASS and others... Money for college, the personal developement the military provides (naturally) from getting your **** yelled at while in BMT . After being in the military and thru college... I could always tell who was military in my classes. THIS ISNT TRUE IN ALL CASES but others who serve could maybe vouche for me also. College seems to be a bit easier, and they seem to rise to the top where I have been(military). I dont think this is by coincidence.
PS: Sorry for the po gramma... Im in a hurry. |

CBASS
You remind me of myself several years back. Get a job in ops (like youre doing) and kick a$$. I have done nothing but reap benefits from my enlistment. Have fun, be sharp, kick a$$, study hard, work out... dont be a dousche bag...etc and youll be fine. Remember, the day you tell them( the pilots) that you wanna fly... the interview starts THEN. Good Luck! |

I'm a high school senior. I want to major in aviation and get my pilot's license in college and some day fly for an airline. AFTER college, I want to apply for a viper pilot training slot at a local ANG viper wing. I know a lot of people enlist, but all I want to do is fly. (not be some technician for 6 years before) What I'm wondering is how likely I am to get a training slot as a civilian when there are other military pilots out there. Can anyone comment?
You want to fly a FIGHTER jet in the AF so the only question I have is: How do you feel about killing your fellow man? We had a wepons puke.......I mean troop who declaired himself a "Conciouncis (SP) Objecter (sp) . He stated this as we got put "on the Bubble". The Squadron CC took his line badge and told his supervisor to decert him. |

About MEPS-
Depends where you go. Where I went, they were jerks. The people there thought they were running boot camp or something. Being ANG, I went to MEPS before even looking at jobs - the recruiter wanted to make sure I would test OK and pass my Flying Class II physical. I did OK on my AFOQT, so I wasn't too worried about my ASVAB. When you go, pay attention and be on the ball. Most of the people there will be raising a hand that day and leaving that day or the next for boot camp. As was said before, don't bring up anything that you did not tell your recruiter. They will interrogate you and you won't realize it until you're in the middle of it. There is a lot of hurry up and wait - get used to it. Do everything with a sense of urgency. Recruiters are there to get you in, MEPS is there to prevent people from getting in. ANG recruiters are a different breed from AD. |

I know what your talking about WILZ, and I've never even enlisted. But my expereince in ROTC has even opened me up to it quite a bit. For one, people who serve obviously have their hair and grooming standards well within regulations. Given the majority of lazy college dorm rats that dont shave untill post exams winter break; thats a sure sign right there that somethings different about that person. Then there is the way the carry themselves. How they talk to other people, how they walk, how they turn corners; something I can't really describe but you just think about it and your like "hmmm... that's very military like." I met a guy yesterday actually who was wearing a USAF sweater in one of my classes, had a short hair cut, clean shaven, walked very confidently; took my guess that he probably worked at the gaurd base. Asked him about it after class and I was right. It's a very cool feeling because it opens you up to meet a lot of people you share something in common with.
You can usually tell retired military too. Because they carry themselves in the same way and something I've noticed... rarely does a retired military person EVER stop meeting hair standards even after retirement. I guess theyre just so ingrained to doing it for so long; anyone else caught that?

| I know that if you're in college serving for the guard and you get activated, they'll take care of getting you back on track once you get back. You'll be a little later to graduate, but you won't have to pay for any messed up classes. |

| Just out of curiosity, when you enlist into the air force, do you get to choose the plane you fly or do they just give you a plane and tell you to shut up whether you like it or not? |

First off, you can't enlist and fly. You have to be commissioned. Now then, your air frame is determined mostly on your UPT performance. Basically what they do is rack and stack your UPT class and then ask you to submit a "wishlist". The IPs start at the top of the list, and work their way down, doing their best to give everyone their first choices. The IPs will also Veto a selection if they dont approve. For example, maybe a weak class member got fighters some how. They will probably not allow him to have that and stick him somewhere else.
