Just curious, what customs and courtesies are exchange pilots considered to follow towards our US flag if they are ever with a unit where it is presented? It seems like there could be a lot of PC stuff in making a person from another country place our flag very high on his list, but then again he is exchanged into our service...

For example...
I am an RAF exchange pilot with my unit when as a group we walk outside and the national anthem starts playing to lower the colors. Of course in the USAF you are required to stop, turn towards the music and salute. Would an RAF pilot be expected to do the same or not? This isn't really the best example I could think of because the RAF pilot is not "attached" to the rest of the squadron at that period. But in an event they do something together.
The only reason I'm asking is I remember a case a few years back where these grade school teachers forced a young chinese girl to sing the national anthem after her parents immigrated to the US, and she refused to sing it. It cost a huge upheval for the local townspeople.
Anyways, I might be a stupid question, I was just curious thats all.

| I know that where I'm stationed now during the playing of the national anthems we render the same customs & courtesies that we show our own flag by stopping and coming to the position of attention and rendering a salute at the sound of the first note and hold the salute thru both anthems. I think you should check with your protocol officer or DO there and ask what the practice is there. I'm sure there is a policy letter covering it somewhere there. |

Yes, even in civies we had to stop in a host country and come to attention. For our own colors it was a salute, civies hat off attention, and if your driving your car you had to stop for the ceremony.
I always thought it was a great honor to take my countries flag down ,put it up, and show respect to it. I still do! |

Yes, and treat them all as if they of higher rank. Salute them all...correct? This is how it was at intelligence training... Go figure... Foreigners at Intel School?! They werent allowed near a SCIF though...  |
