7550 x 210 runway! Musta been a former base or something. What's the 17FL identifier? Shouldn't there be a 'K' there somewhere?
The 'K' before the three letter identifiers is for ICAO. Same reason Montreal is YUL to locals, but CYUL to anyone from outside Canada. More and more of these airports with identifiers like '17FL' are getting newer, more ICAO friendly identifiers. I would imagine private airports would be among the last to get newer identifiers, if they ever do. |

| I know about ICAO standards, I'm just surprised there's still some airports without it. |

Your Snakeness,
Here are some the FAA naming standards. Having registered an airport in the last 5 years, I remembered where this stuff was at…
17FL is just a private airport, thus no ICAO code. Just, excluding the lady in the pic with a 747 type rating and a load of hard surface....

Title: LOCATION IDENTIFIERS Effective 09/01/05
1-2-7 Assignment System
a. Three-letter identifiers are assigned as radio call signs to aeronautical navigation aids; to airports with a manned air traffic control facility or navigational aid within airport boundary; to airports that receive scheduled route air carrier or military airlift service, and to airports designated by the U.S. Customs Service as Airports of Entry. Some of these identifiers are assigned to certain aviation weather reporting stations.
d. Most one-letter, two-number identifiers are assigned to public-use landing facilities within the United States and its jurisdictions, which do not meet the requirements for identifiers in the three-letter series. Some of these identifiers are also assigned to aviation weather reporting stations.
1. One-letter, two-number identifiers are keyed by the alphabetical letter. The letter may appear in the first, middle or last position in the combination of three characters. When the letter signifies an Air Traffic Control Center's area, the assignment will not change if the Center's boundaries are realigned.
2. Identifiers in this series, which could conflict with the ''Victor'',''Jet'' or colored airway numbers are not assigned.
e. Two-letter, two-number identifiers are assigned to private-use landing facilities in the United States and its jurisdictions which do not meet the requirements for three-character assignments. They are keyed by the two-letter Post Office or supplemental abbreviation (listed below) of the state with which they are associated. The two letter code appears in the first two, middle, or last two positions of the four character code.
The following supplemental codes are used in this identifier series:
AN Arizona
CL California
CN California
FA Florida
FD Florida
GE Georgia
IS Illinois
LL Illinois
IG Indiana

SN Kansas
LS Louisiana

| Interesting. Hadn't ever read that. So why is Ocala 17FL? Shouldn't it be 17FD, according to the naming convention above? |

Habu,
Ocala is "Ocala Intl - Jim Taylor Fld" - KOCF.
To answer your question about why FL,
Uh hum, uh hum, cough cough cough... OK, step one, don't say anything bad about "the man".
The table was a "supplemental codes" table and didn't have all the letter listings as Florida is also FL. It is just "the mans" way of making life easier, NOT!, by not putting all the codes in one table so you could get the real picture by just looking at the table. There is not another complete table that I know of, so you have to look and read lines and lines of "information"...
Read this again, really slow, as it like most regs, there is stuff burried in there that can bite you!

| Hahahaha....sorry JR, just pulling your chain here a bit. We used to talk about this in my Federal Regulations class all the time. It's actually quite amazing how general the FARs are. Yet on some things, like you say, are so specific they can bite you. But they're written in such general terms, you miss it completely or interpret it another way. |

Habu,
No worries, trust me if you were from the sticks like I am, you'd have to read everything five times before you understood it! |

D@mn! I just took a look at your link there JR! Those rich Marion County pr#cks never cease to amaze me. Now, if TC ever did get his own Recon Rhino, I'd have to make an "unscheduled" pass over the runway at oh...say...2:30 in the AM? Here's how I see it going down:
TC uses his knee-mounted GPS to acquire Vinny Barbarino's runway, lights the pipes and drops to about, oh say...75 ft AGL. By the time I make the center of the runway, I'd be doing about .98 Mach, and from there it is just a matter of remembering the famous rules taught to us by Gums:
Gums wrote:
1) Stay subsonic
2) Climb into the sun so's they can't ID the type of plane
3) No second passes
4) Have another jet in the area to put the blame on
Ok, so rule two would be out of the question, as it would be night time. Ok, TC just turns off his nav lights...ok, and maybe his transponder too.
Yeah, and rule 4 might come back to haunt me too, but I could always wait for an opportunity to present itself!
BTW, here's a link to Gums's rules and corresponding story. It is a classic on this site! Enjoy!

So you'd climb into the sun at 0230???
How about changing that to "don't climb into the moon!"
