What wings have an O-7 for their King? I know in the Guard, it is pretty much only full birdies...
When I left Tucson in '99 the CC there was a one-star. He's since retired but I think every Tucson CC since then has also been a BG. Not sure who it is now, tho. |

Yeah the numbers I am sure are important to .... someone..... however using the SAC example again. Back in the day...those wings were...... huge..... FMS, OMS, AMS, MMS, etc just to mention maintenance. Very large squadrons. Add to that when desktop computers were not common.... on the support side you had a very large CBPO ( what we call the MPF today ). Usually part of a squadron under the CSG (combat support group ) that changed its name every few years on a whim CHS... MSS etc etc... pick one. CBPO made up a big part of that squadron... more support stuff. A whole supply squadron and a whole transportation squadron ( downsized en masse to todays LRS ).... Security Police Squadron was very big also ( then divided by LEs ( law enforcement ) and SP ( security police ). I was usually assigned to (number of your wing here )_CSG/OTCP ( why a photolab would be run by the base ops boss I don't know but it was that way for years ) When you add it all up... these wings were freakin huge. And I didn't mention everything..... all run by a O-6..... and done that way for years. Just as strike warfare has transformed form sorties per target ... to targets per sortie.... so too have we transformed in that we seem to have a lot of generals. Yeah there are some "big" wings here or there.... but we are now in the The No_General_Left_Behind_Act era. |

Many (if not most) of the O-6 Wing CC's are O-7 selects (including Eglin and Beale's). Those that aren't are closely approaching their primary board, and will get selected: otherwise, they wouldn't be there.
To paraphrase some earlier thoughts: "Their talents could be better used in the big picture, rather than running a combat wing". Let's not lose perspective here. Running a combat wing IS the big picture, and should be the focus of what is done in the USAF. If having this O-7 run to Randolph to run the Personnel Center is considered by some as "the big picture", I'd disagree. We need the best and brightest running combat wings (side note: Luke is not a combat wing). Yes, I've seen awesome O-6's do a great job, but having that star on their shoulder can pay dividends when going up against those in the Pentagon staff (doing "the big picture" jobs). I've seen this make the difference in getting support for things that my combat wing needed. Had an O-6 been on the helm, he wouldn't have had the horsepower to pull it off. |

Typically, wings with 3 or more squadrons will be commanded by an O-7. Two or less, an O-6.
We have three fighter Sq's plus a new AMC terminal. Our Wing King is an O-6.
Ditto for Mtn Home...3 fighter squadrons and the CC is an O-6.
I posted too soon
Our CC is a Brigadier General select, but will move on to another assignment before putting on his star. Apparently, they bring in 0-6s who are good prospects for the General ranks, then move them to higher commands once they get in line for 0-7. |

Well the reason O-6's cant run a wing is cause they are busy runnin ROTC detachments. Honestly; does anyone think anything but a Major or Lt Col is needed to handle a handful of brats like us?

What ROTC Det are you a part of?
Here at Clemson, I know the past 4 AFROTC Commanders. Col Al Whitley (F-117 Bandit) and Col Edge came here specifically to retire. They were Clemson grads and my impression was that they wanted to retire here. The Col after Col Edge (I'll keep him nameless) definitely did not want to retire here. I was told that he wanted to move somewhere after this ROTC position, but as you know, ROTC is exactly the best, or most popular position you can have. He was at the Pentagon before ROTC, and before the Pentagon, he was either the base commander or Wing Commander at Edwards. By knowing that, and knowing him personally, I think he screwed up, got sent to the Pentagon, and then sent here to retire. I've met the Current ROTC Coammander a few times, but I'm not sure what his plans were when he was sent here. Before ROTC, he was the Mission Support Commander at Keesler. |
