On Nov. 1, 1964, five B-57s were destroyed while deployed to Ben Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam. This took out a chunk of our night interdiction ability due to a ( mortar, rocket? ) attack.
So for today, you can see why having a persistant UAV force doing security guard duty around an airbase in indian country surrounded by hostiles ... is important. Re: this article where a few RAF Harriers were taken out by a low tech rocket attack in afcrapistan the other day.

And here's the MoD cutting down on the RAF regiment...
But yes, a persistent drone would be a boon for base defence, especially if it could 'back track' rocket/mortar trajectories so that a Hellfire could return the favour!
Would be fairly simple to use some sort of aerosat set-up in theory. |
