Non-flying combat Officer in the USAF...hmmmmmm...e.g. "non-rated" but still operating in the AOR...
Welp, here's whatcha got. You've got your Combat Controllers...and (recently within the past handful of years) you've got your CROs (Combat Rescue Officers). I knew a few PJs when I was at Moody, but I don't know what the story is behind the CROs.
Hope that helps.

I´d say that the AWACS and JSTAR are flying while beeing used and so do the ppl working in them.
Anway, the non flying combat related work is just a sideshow.
What are the task and carrer chances of non-rated officers in the USAF? |

Much better than they used to be. More and more non-flying officers are making it to the higher ranks. |

I have been hearing from my fellow civilian counter parts, who totally despise my wanting to join the AF, that the AF will tell you anything so that you will join.
Trust me, the Air Force is not all that desperate for anyone to join, what with all the downsizing of personnel. Your clueless buddies don't know what they're talkin about. Simple as that. All they know is what their protective mommy and daddy told them about the evil people who call themselves the military
My AFROTC recruiter told me right off the bat he's not here to pressure me and could care less if I join, but he just wants me to make the right decision for myself. It's all up to me. Make sure joining the military is what you want to do regardless if you're going to be a pilot or not cuz nothing is guaranteed until you get those wings clipped on your dress blues. Yes, you are guaranteed the training if you get chosen for a slot. After that, it's all on you to pass everything they throw at you.
As for non-flying assignments for officers, they told me it depends largely on your college degree, whether its technical or non-technical, etc. I'm a radio/tv/film major so they told me i'll probably be good for PR if I don't get a pilot slot. Maybe it wouldn't be that bad if I can squeeze in to some incentive rides Anyway, good luck and like many have said here, just do some research. You'll find what you're looking for.
So remember...if you don't get chosen for the AIR Force...there's always an opening in the CHAIR Force |

I have done about as much research as I can on getting a pilot slot. Now its all up to me to finish my degree and start studying for the AFOQT. Of course I am trying to build some flight hours as well at a local flight school so I can get my PPL before applying.
By next summer I will have two college degrees. One is a technical degree in computer drafting, and the other in Business Marketing. I graduated on the Deans list in tech school and held a 3.7 GPA. Now, I am one year away from my four year degree with a 3.7 GPA as well. Would be interesting to see where I would fit if UPT proved too much for me to handle.
"Where do we put this guy, in computers or marketing?" LOL
Thanks for the help. |
