Being a newbie, I can say that I think if one is planning to post on fora in general, it's just 'good behavior' to register and let other members know how they can respond to your posts. No you all can say Hajoreh ..... if I would post as a guest you wouldn't have that opportunity. Just like in real life, it's nice to be able to see and know the name of the person you are communicating with. Just as it is in here.
Just my 2 cents... |

Well I see we have 366 registered users on this board, 232 of which have never submitted a single post.
Habu2, The reason for this is that whoever registers for the site is now also automatically registered for the forum. We have merged the two registration and settings together. So some users are registered although they have no intention to participate in the forum.
As you suggested in a PM, we will also remove users who have not logged in to the website for the past x months.

Yeah, but how about those people whose status appears as guest, but whose names you can see?
Phoenix, when a guest ads his name at the bottom of the post we add the name above the 'guest' status (if he hasn't done that himself yet).

Phoenix, I am not sure if the following is what you were referring to. I have once made a post without logging in. I id that post and after the administrator cleaned up the thread, my user id was showed above the label 'Guest'.
Pumpkin, when a regular user forgets to sign in, we take the effort to link that post with his nickname. Sometimes temporarily by just typing his name above the 'guest' status but afterwards we correct it in the database. (e.g. I have now made corrections for your posts in the database.) This ensure that when somebody clicks 'Find all posts by ....', all posts DO show up.
To all: I appreciate all of your input in this matter (pro and contra) and as of next week we will most likely have the possibility to post in this forum restricted to registered users only. I really hope our guests will take a minute or two to register.
Other parts of the website will remain open to anyone.
FYI: This weekend we will do some major upgrades to our setup (website + forum) anyway. Therefore the site might be down on Saturday for a few hours. |

Habu2,
I just checked the DB, and there's a total of 506 post made by "Guest", out of 3261 posts

Well, I have just begun to enter the off-topic forum, I'm a little absent-minded and had not seen yet that it had been opened...
I'm not a "post whore", I don't know as many things about F-16s as, say, Habu or Rigamortis, so you do not so often see my log name (for obvious reasons, I think that my opinion is bettter given when anybody needs info about French fighters).
However, I think, like most of you, that preventing access to posting to non-registered users is a good idea because:
1. It is basic courteousy to sign when you send a post
2. If everybody gives a name, it is easier to know who said what
3. I only have a 56K modem, and I didn't have any problem to register, it was really quick and easy, and I don't have any difficulty to browse forums anyway
Well, that's only my 'little poster" opinion. |
