Just wondering if anyone knows if the -35 is being build under the 'modular' construction concept like the F-16 was? For those who don't know, the F-16 was build in 5 main sections (if I remember this right from tech school); left wing, right wing, aft section, center section, and forward section; plus the 'inlet' section, depending on who you ask. Principle behind this (as it was explained to me) was to allow 'rapid' replacement (very relative term) of segments of the aircraft, should they become battle damaged. Anyone have any ideas?

Yep, from what I have seen that is the standard for all US aircraft. It is a big deal when all the modules come together. The F22 has modules made in different locations, shipped to LM in Georgia (IIRC) and they are put together there.

It is not the same. Whereas the F-16 is built in modules, the F-35 will be built on a "moving assembly" similar to how cars are made. Not build a section here, then move them together but instead like on a conveyor belt with all wiring tubing fuel lines etc. in the section. For the F-16, built all structure then wiring, then tubes.

This is a new concept for construction.

Think of it like this: Slice an apple into 8 pieces. Each slice is complete and could be replaced into another apple.

Real fast for battle repair!
