Nearly fifteen years ago, the 401TFW / 614TFS deployed from our home at Torrejon AB, Spain to Doha, Qatar for the Gulf War. The New York Times named us 'The Forgotten 1000' but we compiled 1303 sorties and 3.1 million pounds of ordinance delivered in 42 days, by our pilots in our 24 (plus a couple of 'replacements') F-16C/D's.

This is our 'new' home on the web: http://www.lucky-devils.net I think I've gotten most of the bugs worked out, but I'm new at this, so cut me some slack...

Are you a Lucky Devil from the Gulf War? Sign the Roll Call. Do you know one? Send them our way. I'd like to make this a home for all of us, so send your pics, stories, memories, whatever... and I'll put them up.

Mike Kopack

Hey Mike, Scott Stutler here (DCC 87-0242). I just sent you my new email. Please update it in the roll call if you could. It will be interesting to see how many of us will check in.

Thanks Scott, will update your contact information.

Everyone else out there - help us out - take a look at the site and let me know what you think. Come on, most F-16 people I've met aren't shy...

Ask around and see if we can find any more Lucky Devils out there. Start off by asking that old pilot/crew chief/specialist (hey, it was almost fifteen years ago...) - especially if he's drinking, could be a good sign that they'd been assigned in Espana!

Twisted Evil Stay Lucky! Twisted Evil
Mike

Mike

I've enjoyed your site for years. When are you going to finish your story of being deployed to the Gulf? I know you don't have any time Smile but keep hoping you'll get around to it.

Fifteen years ago we were all in Doha, waiting... The Vipers were bombed up and ready, and if we weren't ready we weren't ever going to be, waiting... We'd been in the desert for four months and if living in a tent and eating blowing sand could be routine, it was, waiting...

I'd assume that our pilots were making the final preperations for their initial missions. On the maintenance side, the AGS guys had our aircraft prepared as well as any ever have been, in EMS we were completing what we thought would be our final phases for 'the duration'. Decontamination was ready to go, bombs and fuel tanks were being built up, and on the flightline and back in tent city the final shelters were being completed. Soon it would be time for the Lucky Devils to do the job that we'd been sent to do, just as they had flying F-100's in SEA and B-17's in WWII... The 'Forgotten 1000' would soon be at war.

Please stop in and take a look around and let us know what you think. If you were in Doha with us sign the Roll Call, and if you know anyone who was please let them know where we are.

Stay Lucky!
