I guess we'll all have to wait until 16May to find out!
Where can I get this info from?

Search Google for BRAC rumors. Most of the sites that will come up have a list of rumored bases. Cannon is rumored to be closed because of the other rumor of the block 30's being deactivated. There is also a squadron of singapore 16's, but they're leaving also so that would leave 2 [Link pending approval] of block 40's and one of block 50's. So either Cannon will be closed or it will be realigned.

I'm not one for giving life support to mere speculation and rumors. However my recent visit to Phoenix leads me to believe that if it continues at it's current clip, it'll probably cover more square mileage than the DFW area in a few years, if it hasn't done so already. I couldn't turn my head and not see new homes or businesses going up. The northwesterly expansion in particular may have an affect on how Luke conducts it's mission. Restricted flying times, certain noise abatement maneuvers, and the almost-guaranteed harping from ill-informed residents who don't appreciate having an operation like Luke in their backyard no matter how important it is to USAF readiness or national security. You know the old line: "Hey!.....when I bought this brand new house next to an active air force base nobody told me I'd actually have to tolerate the jet noise! Shut the base down or I'll sue!" Bang Head

Clovis on the other hand, from what I gather, has broad-based public support for Cannon and it's mission and would welcome any additional activity that may be transferred from Luke should that decision be made. The sticking point for BRAC IMO will be the logistics of moving an operation the size of Luke (and the obvious costs involved) up to Cannon in a timely manner. Making a convincing cost-value assesment in Cannon's favor will be crucial. So if the folks in Clovis want to see it done they need to get on the horn to their reps in D.C and tell them to make it happen.

I've heard alot of the same stuff, that there are alot of people in the area who object to having a thriving AF base in the middle of what's becoming a huge city. Plus, consider the building thats going on- alot of "upper class", that for the most part doesn't want anything to do with the military (generalized statement, I know there are rich people who support us, too).
The AF wanting to retire its block 30's won't have much impact, I don't think. When BRAC gets spelled out, "re-allignment" is the biggest word in there. Retire the block 30's, saving a wad of cash. Transfer Luke to Cannon, saving a wad of cash by closing one whole base. Run pratts and GE's on the same base, consolidate specalist and backshop stuff they share, and save a wad of cash. Be able to ship pratt and GE parts to the same base for use from supply centers, save a wad of cash. Give up some of the training ranges in AZ, since they aren't needed as much, and save a wad of cash. See where this is going? I think it is a logical step, although one I would hate to see happen. I've heard nothing but bad stuff about cannon, and I absolutely loved luke when I was there for tech school.
