Is there any particular reason why the deploment to Kunsan doesn't allow pilots or airmen to bring family members? How long does the deployment typically last? How much outside contact can pilots have with family members?

As mentioned above, it is a remote assignment, so the facilities aren't in place to allow family members. Osan is the same way, except there are some billets (command sponsored) that allow certain people (senior ranking) to bring their families along, since some higher-up positions are 2 year tours. Most tours are one year, but some crazies (my opinion, sorry) extend for two years or longer. There are perks, like additional pay, to do that, but it isn't worth it to me.
Anyway, the amount of contact anyone has with their family back home is "as much as they want", really. Some people bring their familes over and have them live off base (frowned on by supervison, though). It is nothing at all like Iraq or Afghanistan, where "I can't tell you where I am or when I'll get to a phone next". Everyone can have a phone/internet connection in their dorm room, mail comes and goes every day except sunday and holidays (just like the states), and calling cards are available to let us call back to the states for around 4 cents a minute. In short, anyone who comes to Korea (Osan or Kunsan) and tells their family/loved ones they "just can't stay in regular contact because we're in a deployed location" is full of $hit. Sorry, just a personal irritation of mine, I've seen married people pull that crap so they can cheat easily while they're over here and it really gets to me- not everyone is that way though, mind you. |
