Great pic.
Sorry TC, I kinda forgot about this post. Holloman still has the Luftwaffe Tornado training. |

Cool stuff.
I figured they did, because last Fall, Holloman's Tornado unit, and another Luftwaffe Tornado unit, actually from Germany both came in around the same time for WSEP missions, firing AMRAAMs no less.
I'd love to see their demo team again. It's a great show!

Israel quietly retired their Phantoms early last year.
Germany will have F-4Fs in Germany for a few more years, but it is true they are no longer at Holloman. The Tornados will be at Holloman for a long time yet.
here are pictures we took at Holloman last fall. http://www.geocities.com/phantomhanger/
The 20th FS was the German unit.
We spent several days on the flightline surrounded by Phantoms. I got to stand by Steve Ritchie and observe a Qf-4 crank up and then as it taxied away it hit us with its very hot exhaust. We watched 8 F-4F Phantoms take off one behind the other and felt the ground shake. It was awesome!
To hear what I think of the F-4 click this link.

"The F-4 was a huge, powerfull, ugly, wonderful, modern aircraft. It fit it's role like the Devil in Hell. I love that airplane. It would carry more bombs that a B-17. It would go faster than grease lightning. It was a beast. In a dogfight it would slam you around. It would turn crisp and it was strong and reliable. Then it would fly you home docile and land like like a feather. It was a beautiflul airplane." Robin Olds, commander, 8th Tactical Fighter Wing.
Here is a little essay I started about the F-4's air combat ability. I need to finish it sometime.

A quick correction, I stood by General Robin Olds, not Ritchie. It's too early in the day for me to be typeing!

| I went last year (2004) to Thunder over Louisville to help support there f-16's. They had 2 of the German f-4f there. And man did they put on an impressive show. Then they first came in on Friday they each did 3 Touch and gos. Each time they flew over the Flt line lower and lower. The last pass of the last airplane he came across with both burners lit and about 40 to 60 feet off the ground. That gave me chills to see that. And it sucks that I didn't have a camera. Cause that will probley be the last time I ever see a Phantom fly. What a great plane. |

An old buddy of mine flew Phantoms in SEA and he just loved the thing. You could hang practically anything off it and and employ it effectively. He said he felt safer in the Phantom during combat than any other jet he'd flown (and the list is impressive). He also used to buzz the Hanoi Hilton during Linebacker II to let the guys in there know they weren't forgotten. However he couldn't tell if Jane Fonda was manning (or is it woman-ing?) any of the AAA sites he encountered. His exploits were captured in a painting by Phillip West called "Reunion Over Hanoi". A thumbnail of the painting is below. Click on the image to go to the story behind the painting.

| I am lucky enough to be involved (occasionally) with the ROKAF (S. Korean Air Force) F-4's. They come into both Osan and Kunsan now and then, so we (TA) can stay proficient on basic servicing and such. Got to spend a week TDY in Suwon working E models, as well as ROKAF F-5E/F's. The experiance really gives you an appreciation of how far we've come to the F-16 (which I'm a crew chief on), but the F-4 is an awsome Brute and good fun to work on. If only they'd come up with an easier way to pin that damn ejection seat... |

| I like the Phantom "E", cos it's a marvellous fighter. There are a lot of F-4Es flying until today, in great air forces such as Israel... how can you explain that?? |

Looks like the engine backfired! Maybe a birdstrike on the leading edge of the inlet ramp? |
