Well, the U.S.A.F. just cancelled the Thunderbird season... Other flying got cut 18%. Now the question I guess is what is next? |

| Funny how the Commemorative Air Force can afford a B-17 fly-over over the Nascar race in Phoenix, but our air force cant with Luke AFB right there... |

| If the US gov't wants to REALLY save some money, it needs to ground Air Force One. |

In all seriousness, I can't figure out why they don't use a C-37B/C-40 more for presidential/VIP transport. The actual C-37Bs (G550) in service have quite nice interiors, but not big enough for all the support staff and press pool need for "official" visits, which adds to the insanely high costs. |

| Y'all can get the T-birds back on the road if you really miss them that badly. Just call your congressman and tell him / her that you're willing to pay more Federal taxes to keep them airborne. |

It's not quite that simple (training costs and all) but apparently the cost of a Thunderbirds performance isn't insanely high, and in some cases, the event organizes have to pay the direct costs.
I remember reading the ACC F-22 requirements and its pretty involved. Fuel has to be provided from an approved contractor and a whole bunch of other requirements. For some events, the organizer has to pay for the fuel and other costs. I doubt the Thunderbirds are substantially different with regard to organizer requirements and costs involve. Each F-16 costs $9,742/Hr Reimbursable Rate, according to DoD Comptroller, when other maintenance costs are factored in, its ~50% higher. Some figures put the total cost of each show at $250k.
According to the Support Manual, the USAF pays for the fuel at standard rates, and the show organizer is responsible for transport of fuel costs, and any costs incurred over the standard rates.

I've heard that the the USAF does request reimbursement of the costs for demonstration performances, on a case-by-case basis. One reason is that events have an entry-fee.
Back when I was working for a DoD contractor, there was a cost/budgeting arrangement for use of DoD assets including aircraft. For example, contractor training flights were usually billed as a separate line item, and were a reimbursable expense to the DoD |

Actually one has nothing to do with the other. |

| Now their blk52's are just sitting there rotting away. When they fly again in Oct, should be interesting. |
