Hey there guys! One of the benefits of moving to Vegas is my proximity to Nellis AFB. I know they run Red Flag exercises out of there, but I don't know much else about it. I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of some foreign jets around the base and I figured that Red Flag might give me a chance to see some MiGs and others, even if they're in the pattern. I know where I can find the dates for the exercises on the net, but I don't know what time of day would be the best to go up there.

Without breaching security, is there any way someone could give me a better idea of when I should head up to Nellis? I don't need specific times if that's a problem, even something like early morning or around noon would help!

Thanks in advance Very Happy !

Parrothead,
I would say your request is still a problem. And I know you don't mean it to be. Have you ever tried contacting public affairs on base and requesting an opportunity to check out the aircraft? I'm not sure how the security is these days but in my past experiences showing people around seemed to happen all the time. But again, it's been a about a year since my last visit there. Our unit will be there for a red flag in August by the way. IN AUGUST!.........Nothing like leaving beautiful weather in Colorado and going to NELLIS in AUGUST!!!! Give the public affairs office a call and see what they can do. If not, ask them if they are willing to let you know the time of day (fat chance). Hell, you might be surprised. I know Nellis has a lot of support from the City of Las Vegas and State of Nevada and is always working P.R.
Have a great day!

p.s. Though the area can be fun for a visit...... The constant noise of aircraft taking off while your working on the flightline can drive you nuts. I've only visited the place approximately 12 times in the last 20 years.

Chickenlegs, thanks for the reply Very Happy ! I figured it might be a problem, but you'll never know if you never ask, right Smile ? I hadn't thought of asking the PAO. Sorry, the brain's been trying to go on vacation without me lately. I'll try that closer to the exercise date!

Sorry to hear you have to come out here in August. The funny thing is that I've never been to Vegas in the summer, only in December or January. I moved out here in late October and every time I've been here it's been COLD!!! I'm nearly convinced this place never gets warm Laughing (just kidding Wink ).

Having grown up near Miramar and having gone to school across the street from it, I know all about jet and helicopter noise Very Happy ! I don't know if it's because I grew up with it, but for some reason jet noise is actually kind of calming to me Smile . Now I do know that all that jet noise can be tiring on a flightline, too. After all my years of airshows (and going all three days per airshow if possible), I can appreciate how you feel Smile .
