You have to take this thread for what it is... the complete absurdity of this topic is what is keeping it at the top of the thread page. I do like how your only concern is for the welfare of the aircraft... no concern for poor Felix. Shocked Very Happy

LOL, well here's the thing: a multi-million dollar stealth fighter jet is a more important national defense asset than a crazed austrian ex-paratrooper.
What Felix is trying should be considered almost suicidal, if he hits a F-22 on the way down, it would take a lot of money to repair the jet(not to menition the cleanup of the aftermath).

Hopefully, the airspace will be clear for his attempt tomorrow.

What a waste of a forum topic.

The idea of escorting Felix in his drop is absurb(there is no security threat involved)
If there was a fighter jet escorting Felix, there would be a great chance of a horrible bird(actually, man)strike on the aircraft which could either seriously damage or destroy it.

..First off, I've always been curious about the Raptor's ability to try to get to those heights- so when i saw this, all that curiosity bubbled to the surface.
Waste of a topic? Lol, if someone is really curious about planes trying to operate at that height, and wants input from others who have a bit of knowledge on the subject, they'd have to know someone or be at a loss. So...I don't consider it a waste of pixels.

Besides, you can always learn something from someone.

Now, onto the particular subject of escorting Felix- it'd just be covering his balloon, in that case. And that'd be where I would ponder how the F-22 would fare trying to keep climbing , in any way it can(not a zoom climb necessairly) with his balloon which can go that height.

Alas, as someone else noted, in this day and age, heights like that are uncommon. Tis an extreme shame in my opinion- but that doesn't mean thinking about it is a waste.

Now Felix needs to bungee jump from the same altitude, then he could break the sound barrier on the way back up too. Smile

I actually enjoyed the absurdity of this topic...not like this forum is so active that it's pushing topics off the page...

Anyway...to add to the absurd I wonder thoughts... I wonder if the human body is even strong enough to withstand supersonic flight...er fall or whatever. With a protective suit and helmet of course.

...On the flight ceiling bit...I doubt the Raptor is much more capable than a F15 and probably less so than a zipper considering turbojets are better suited for high altitude and the fadec's on the F119's would probably shut the party down once they got up so high. Even the SR needed good conditions to go much over 80 in level flight.

If you go google the nf-104 enough, you might run across a site that has some good stories written by one of the pilots in NF program. The way he describes it was making high altitude zoom climb attempt required an extremely well flown profile that even minor mistakes would kill your attempt and possibly yourself...as proven by Yeager.
If fact, they had to shut down the J79 at something like FL75-80 to avoid melting the turbine section, and the 6000lb rocket and Sir Isaac gave them the next 20-30k feet...

Sack time, but if I remember in the morning I'll see if I can find that site on NF...real entertaining read...especially his take on Yeager Wink

Stark Industries in arrangement with Lockheed can replace the F-22 if the pilot has to eject. Remember Ironman?

In all seriousness, the NF104 didn't have fly-by-wire RCS, like the space shuttle, and the F-22 TVC wouldn't work very well if the engines shut down down at high altitude, although they could be somewhat effective at flight idle, assuming they don't overheat during a zoom profile. I haven't seen reference to the F-22 having Yaw differential thrust control, except by careful control of the "throttle".
