Most of that could probably have been fixed by upgrading the engines, extending the wings, and adding armor. Actually, it looks like Boeing plans on upgrading it to modern technology.

You're quite right on the OV-10X. However, even I admit that airframe upgrades only go so far. You reach a point where you just need to give up and design something new.

Explain that to the B-52 Wink

A-10 has the 30mm gun. OV-10 never will.

It could, just not the GAU-8.

If it ever got a 30mm, it would be the same gun M230 as on the Apache Smile

I really don't know about whether it could take the GAU-8 or not (It seems to have plenty of room), but at least it wouldn't have had the A-10's flame-out problem from the gun's propellant gasses.

How's this:

An A-10 being converted for Storm Chasing duties, due to fly in 2013.

Thanks Spudman! I've heard of an (aborted) plan to covert some A-10's into A-10 "Firehogs" water bombers for firefighting duty. But I was unaware of any plans to use surplus A-10's for storm chasing before now. Here's another link http://www.popularmechanics.com/science ... z1eCJ3TTYY

A-10s tested the new scorpion helmet system in a maritime environment at RIMPAC 2012 in Hawaii. I wonder if they just do cas for the Marines or if they also have an antship role?

If I remember correctly, the M230 has a lower RoF and muzzle velocity. It's good at killing soft targets, but will struggle against armor (at least compared to the GAU-Cool.

The M230 has a HEAT-type warhead (velocity is irrelevant to penetration) and the GAU-8 uses a DU combined with high velocity for penetration.

Velocity isn't irrelevant for HEAT warheads.
They don't work at all if they are traveling too fast relative to the target.

Well, that's not going to ever be an issue for the M230 Wink.

Doesnt the gun with the higher velocity have longer range? I would think that would help give a fast moving aircraft (compared to a chopper) a better chance at aiming at their target.

The M230 has a lot more vibration, considering the whole assembly moves to recoil and shakes the aircraft using a long moment arm. The GAU-8 steadies itself directly against the superstructure and the movement of the multiple barrels actually stabilizes the aircraft. You're better off not mounting the M230 on your OV-10.

Considering the M230 can be tripod mounted & the OV-10 can mount a 20mm Gatling, I consider the M230 on the OV-10 a no brainer.

Consider this, how nasty would this be in a belly turret with laser-guided rounds (in the testing stage) from an orbiting OV-10?
