I'm an AF 2Lt awaiting pilot training in July. I have some reservations (which I hope to clear before I go) about the flying life, how much I like flying and the active duty flying world.

I've been looking into ANG flying opportunities lately and they strike me as more up my alley. There are just a lot of things I'd like to do in the next decade that the 10 year Active Duty Service Committment won't let me do--the opportunity to fly is just too good an opportunity to pass up.

Anyone got any advice on how a ROTC guy with a 4 year Active Service COmittment can slide over to the Guard world and fly for the ANG?

Any advice--on anything--would be helpful here.

First off, I heard that the committment is back to 8 years after pilot training....look into that. Here is my two cents worth: right now you have the opportunity to go to UPT....an oppportunity thousands want but only hundreds get. It would take pretty big cajones to turn your back on that on the gamble you can get hired by an ANG unit down the road. Plus, the four years of non-flying active duty might not be all that fun. It would be pretty tough to get hired by a fighter unit as it is tough to begin with, even tougher when you are already a Capt...which you will be after your active duty time. Last thought, Palace Chase does roll around...I think it is open right now. I have heard that you need to have completed 2/3 of your active duty committment before you apply for that.

hmsic, you'd be crazy to passup upt slot. The guard very rarely(almost never)hires people off the street and sends them to upt. Spend your time in the barrel then join the guard.
