Does the ridge between the two thrust vectoring nozzles provide an aerodynamic, stealth, or avionics purpose?

At first glance it seems the purpose is to obfuscate the IR emissions from the engines when viewed from the side, but I am no specialist or anything.

Thanks.

I believe that is the housing for the emergency tailhook.

After spending some time on the flightline of a Naval Air Station, I now understand the benefit of a tailhook even when touching down on land is the only option: Being able to control a plane during an emergency landing.

Do most all (fighter) planes have tailhooks now?

The F-15 and F-16 have tailhooks too.

Anyone have a diagram or clearer picture of how this articulates low enough to catch a wire?

The hook drops far enough to make full contact with the runway surface. That picture shows the bar used to hold it up during tow operations.

While the obvious 'emergency landing' use has already been spoken for; far more often the hooks are used as 'tie-downs' to perform high power engine runs. (see photo)

Not sure if 'all fighter planes' have them, but they sure come in handy for 'engine guys' Cheers
