I stumbled across this article in the link above from Defensetech.org. One of the Raptors in a red flag exercise had to descend to 18,000 due to hypoxia symptoms. Not sure what happened before, whether manuevers may have caused an issue with the life support system, but this needs to get resolved ASAP, whether it's replacing a LOx bottle or doing extensive modifications to the bleed-air and OBOGS.

It could just be the recent media coverage but this issue seems to be gaining importance every day. Just a week ago it didn't seem to be so urgent of a problem but now it sounds like every pilot and their mother is suffering from "hypoxia like symptoms"

I much prefer pilots thinking they have hypoxia symptoms and being grounded than pilots not recognizing anything at all and then losing their lives or the aircraft moments later.

That audio did not sound like an emergency to me. He sounded very calm and collected.

The recording was actually of Rocket 02, another jet. Rocket 04 was experiencing physiological difficulties.

In most situations, the emergency response to a physiological issue is different than say an emergency due to a cockpit warning indicator. For physiological issues, they would have EMTs and possibly the flight surgeon available the minute they land. They would try and draw a blood sample as soon as possible. They don't do that for a cockpit warning light. The response to a physiological situation is not a recent decision based on the F-22 only.

In training, its better to declare an emergency and receive all the required assistance when a $140m jet is involved.

How would Rocket 02 know of R04's issue or was that not included in the audio?

Actually, I was slightly incorrect. Rocket 03, not Rocket 02, was escorting Rocket 04, according to the article. This was not reflected in the audio snippet posted. The article mentions two aircraft involved. Even in the snippet, it seemed apparent to me that a second jet is involved, probably section lead. I think there was more communications before the recording started.[edit: Not on the same channel, apparently ]

In another other news, rumor has it that a T-41 Mescalero recorded a simulated shoot down of an F-22 by having the crew members using their M9 pistols in a looooong, drawn-out slooooow-speed dogfight at the last Red Flag. I heard the event was caught on video via a camcorder (non-HD, though).

That's nothing. Did you know the F-22 isn't actually stealthy? I saw one sitting on the ramp. Clearly it's detectable. Wink

Clearly, you haven’t been briefed on the latest upgrades to the F-22, otherwise you would have been aware of its visual stealth feature.

Crew Chiefs and pilots reportedly have "difficulties" with this feature sometimes.

Is it true or just a rumor that the F/A 18 E/F/G Super Hornet has the same Oboggs as the F-22?? Thought I read something on this and that they too were having issues. If so why no hype on those guys? Just askin' and Just sayin'
