| RCS is obviously the most important thing going for todays fighters.....or lack of it. All of the fighters lately have big air intakes stuck to the side or the bottom of the fuselage. Looking at the F-86 Sabre or the F-84 Thunderjet of the fifties where the intake is in the front of the fuselage would this have any benefit of reducing RCS??? |

As far as I know, there are two considerations: making sure that the edges of the intake aren't aligned such that they reflect radar forward, and making sure that there is not line of sight to the fan blade, which is a strong reflector.
The YF-32 had a front intake designed to keep it's signature down, but the older jets were not designed with those considerations. |

..what count to 10 said plus the fact that you need some sort of absorbant material in the duct, or it will work as a perfect reflector, reflecting energy in all directions that the intake can be seen from..
The duct gets slightly longer when the air intake is up front, this gives a relatively smoother curvature of the intake duct (to hide the engine face) wich is beneficial from a loss point of view.
If you are interested in the fundamentals here is a short document to read:

Where would the radar go? |
