Raptors in the Sandbox

As tensions between Iran and the U.S. and Israel continue to mount over the former’s pursuit of nuclear weapons technologies, the U.S. has quietly begun a deployment of its premier stealthy fighter, the twin-engine F-22, to the nearby United Arab Emirates.

Multiple of the Lockheed Martin aircraft will operate out of Al Dhafra Air Base there, say industry sources. This is the same base from which U-2s and Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicles have been launched since shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“The United States Air Force has deployed F-22s to Southwest Asia,” according to a statement from service spokesman Capt. Phil Ventura. “Such deployments strengthen military-to-military relationships, promote sovereign and regional security, improve combined tactical air operations and enhance interoperability of forces, equipment and procedures.” .....

Because .the F-22’s . ... is considered the most sophisticated fighter in the world. Deploying it to any region causes occupants there to take note. says one industry official.

The timing of the deployment could be a signal from Washington to Iran to take seriously objections to the latter’s nuclear weapons ambitions.

Very Happy

We used to call this sort of thing a "hide" in the Infantry. Go out on a big operation, make a lot of noise, then make a big show on exfil... leaving a squad or two behind to see if they could ambush any insurgents that popped up for funny business afterword. The object wasn't to be perfectly hidden, just to be inconspicuous after the larger commotion.

I have been asked before where an F-22 could be stationed in the middle east but I myself was unsure.

The more you know, I suppose.

I wonder how many ISR sorties have already been accomplished by the F-22s. Heh heh.

Come on Iran, you must have someone in the IRIAF brave enough to go and dance with the F-22...

Ahmed: "Your wingman going down in flames."

I don't think the Russians would let them risk their equipment like that if there is any chance of HARM coming their way.

I've got a question: I know that most fighters have warning systems that go off if they are being tracked by a radar guided missile, but how many would notice if a sidewinder was closing in on them from behind?
I can see raptors getting behind an unwitting opponent before firing. It would make for a pretty wicked movie visual.

They'd need to know it's there first. But aside from that...

Why exactly would anyone WANT there to be a fight? You see all-out war as inevitable and prefer sooner rather than later?

It really depends on if their fighters have a MAWS (missile approach warning system). Most of Iran's fighters are outdated heaps of junk so I seriously doubt even their Mig-29s will have them. You can give me all of the talk that the Iranians are good at reverse engineering and stuff but still I don't see how most of their fleet could possibly have them. They can be passive (IR or UV based) or active (pulse doppler) sensors and they are featured on pretty much every 4.5 and 5th gen fighter in the works or in service. Of course most of said fighters use passive sensors as an active system would only give away your position (bad for F-22).

For all the good they'd do. They took Saddam's out with JDAMs.

Even if Iran could sever a JDAM's GPS uplink there's still the inertial reference unit to have to worry about. It's nowhere near as accurate but I'd imagine it'll do fine in most scenarios.
